FAIRBANK — The East Marshall baseball team rallied to take a one-run lead only to see Don Bosco take it back in a 9-8 Dons victory in Tuesday’s Class 1A District 8 semifinal at Wapsie Valley High School.
The Dons (24-5) scored three times in the sixth inning to break a 4-all tie, but East Marshall (11-16) overcame the 7-4 deficit to take an 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh.
East Marshall got two hits apiece from Blake Neuroth and Austin Crandon, with Neuroth scoring twice and driving in a run. Crandon’s courtesy runner Tate Bjelland scored a run as well.
The Mustangs were limited to seven singles, including one each for Eli Burns, Gavin Gaschler and Cael Neuroth. Nathan Frye took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs — four earned — on eight hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out three. Jackson Busch pitched 2 2/3 innings as the starter.
Aidan Nielson allowed three unearned runs over three innings as Don Bosco’s starter, while Brady Brasch pitched four frames for the win. Zander Youngblut went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Dons offensively.
Don Bosco advances to face 10th-ranked Wapsie Valley (15-8) in Saturday’s district final near Fairbank.
Comets handle Hawks
CONRAD — The BCLUW softball team got a one-hit shutout from pitcher Eden Ladehoff in a 4-0 win over Lynnville-Sully in Monday’s Class 1A Region 3 first-round game.
Ladehoff struck out 14 and walked none in the win, and she helped her own cause with two of BCLUW’s eight hits. She went 2-for-3 as the Comets (11-12) scored twice in both the fifth and sixth innings to advance.
Cami Ward was 2-for-2 at the plate with a run, while Carolyna White was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Leila Wedgwood singled and scored, Brayleigh Gardner hit an RBI single, and Brook Ward added a hit for the Comets against Lynnville-Sully (7-18).
Cougars clip GMG, 4-2
GREEN MOUNTAIN — AGWSR broke a 2-all tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to overtake GMG for a 4-2 victory in Monday’s Class 1A Region 3 first-round softball game.
GMG (9-14) took a 2-1 lead with its two runs in the third inning, coming on a two-run home run by Skyler Murty.
AGWSR (5-23) scored the tying run in the top of the fifth and got two more in the seventh to rally for the win.
Murty was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and the go-ahead home run for the Wolverines. Piper Jones reached on a walk and scored in front of Murty on the homer.
Tatum Jones hit a double, while Grace Mathern and Kaylee Beach added singles for GMG.
Wolverines pitcher Riah Boege struck out a whopping 18 in defeat, allowing four runs on five hits and six walks.
Lila Holmgaard was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored to lead AGWSR offensively. Kaesyn Slifer struck out 12 and walked four for the win.
