SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans finish off sweep of Cubs
NEVADA — Aubree Greenwood pitched a three-hit shutout and the West Marshall softball team got the season sweep of Nevada with an 8-0 triumph on Monday night in Heart of Iowa Conference play.
Greenwood struck out 11 and walked one in the wire-to-wire win for West Marshall (19-10, 11-5). The Trojan offense benefitted from nine total walks issued by Nevada pitching, with four of those free baserunners scoring.
Rachel Randall was 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI to lead the Trojans, who needed only five hits to knock off the Cubs (9-15, 3-11). Jenna Randall doubled and scored three times, while Hattie McCollum hit an RBI double and scored twice. Olivia Randall singled, scored and added an RBI groundout.
Huskies out-slug Mustangs 11-8
LE GRAND — Aspen Weir hit a pair of two-run home runs to lead Oelwein past the Class 2A No. 13 East Marshall softball team 11-8 in Monday’s North Iowa Cedar League slugfest.
The host Mustangs (19-8) countered Weir’s first round-tripper in the first inning with five runs of their own, but the lead didn’t last. Oelwein (13-6) scored nine times between the third and sixth innings to take an 11-6 lead that held up for the remainder.
Weir ended 3-for-5 with four RBIs and was the Huskies’ winning pitcher, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
East Marshall outhit Oelwein 11-9 but couldn’t atone for five errors defensively. Peyton Grabenbauer gave up seven earned runs on nine hits and eight walks while striking out nine in the loss.
Libby Atcher had an RBI double and a two-run single to lead the Mustang bats. East Marshall got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Sophia Adkins added a two-run double, Grabenbauer had a double and a run scoring single, while Ashtyn Wheater and Taylor Halverson had two hits apiece. Wheater and Gianna Boswell both scored twice, as did Grabenbauer’s courtesy runner Lexi Novotny.
BCLUW rallies past Redhawks
CONRAD — The BCLUW softball team scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to overtake North Tama for a 2-1 triumph in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.
Eden Ladehoff pitched a three-hitter for the Comets, walking only one while striking out 14. She also had one of the team’s four hits.
Wyllo Collins doubled and scored, Brooke Ward hit an RBI single, while Brayleigh Gardner singled and scored for BCLUW (9-11, 9-5).
East Marshall wins in a walk-off
GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team surrendered a three-run lead in the seventh inning before beating Oelwein in the eighth, scoring a 9-8 victory on Monday night in North Iowa Cedar League play.
The Mustangs (9-15, 6-8) led 8-5 after six innings before Oelwein rallied to tie.
Eli Burns went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs, while Blake Neuroth homered, scored twice and plated three runs. Nathan Frye added two hits, scored once and drove in a run, while Kaden Grant singled and scored twice.
Burns pitched four innings for the win, allowing three runs on five hits and three walked while striking out four. Neuroth pitched the first four frames, allowing five runs — two earned — on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Landon Reckhemmer homered among three hits for Oelwein (10-12, 7-7).
Spartans start fast, foil GMG
GREEN MOUNTAIN — Collins-Maxwell scored seven times in the top of the first inning and withstood the GMG baseball team the rest of the way for a 9-6 win in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.
The host Wolverines (3-17) got within 7-6 before the Spartans (13-10) tallied twice in the top of the fifth for much-needed insurance.
Drayson Stephenson pitched six innings of relief for GMG, allowing two runs — one earned — on six hits. Ethan Klemesrud surrendered all seven runs in the first for the loss.
Klemesrud went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored to lead the Wolverine offense. Jacoby Woodbury was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run, while Stephenson singled and drove in a pair. Wilken Schmitz and Liam Stephenson both singled while Easton Brown drove in a run as GMG took advantage of 10 walks issued by Spartan pitching.
