Stupp helps Bobcats wallop Waterloo East
WATERLOO — Emma Stupp launched her 10th home run of the summer and the Marshalltown softball team stamped out Waterloo East for an Iowa Alliance Conference sweep in Tuesday’s regular-season finale, toppling the Trojans 11-2 and 12-1.
Briley Danielson pitched a three-hitter in the five-inning opener for Marshalltown, walking two while striking out six in the victory. She allowed just one earned run as Waterloo East was chasing from the get-go.
Marshalltown (18-20, 6-10) scored five times in the first half inning of the day, highlighted by six consecutive hits for the Bobcats. Abby Janssen and Danielson singled, Faith Sommerlot and Stupp both doubled, and Lauren O’Neal and Olivia Wise followed with RBI singles to get MHS out to an early 5-0 lead.
Marshalltown added six more runs in the top of the fourth, fueled by three walks and another six hits. Hanna Osgood singled and scored on a Bristol Ealy triple, Janssen singled in a run and Danielson followed with a double. Sommerlot scored one on a single, Waterloo East pitching issued three-straight walks, and Ella DeMonte got an RBI single as the Bobcats sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
Sommerlot finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs, while Janssen was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Her courtesy runner Leah Graves scored twice.
In the second game, Stupp smacked a three-run double, a single and a two-run homer to help her own cause in the pitcher’s circle. She finished 3-for-3 with five RBIs at the plate, and pitched a two-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts.
Waterloo East (1-33, 0-18) got its only run on a solo homer by Graysyn Downing in the bottom of the fourth and final inning. The Trojans suffered their 29th loss in a row.
Janssen went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Osgood scored one run on her behalf, while fellow courtesy runner Avery Buschbom tallied two runs in place of Stupp on the bases.
Wise went 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI, while Danielson hit an RBI double and had a bases-loaded walk.
Marshalltown opens the postseason at home on Thursday night, entertaining Des Moines East in a 7 p.m. first-round pairing in Class 5A Region 4 play.
