The future of the Iowa Star Conference's South Division of softball is going to look a lot like it did this summer, if the all-conference teams prove pertinent.
Eight of the 12 girls selected to the all-ISC South squad were underclassmen, meaning the future of the division is what the local teams make of it. BCLUW, which finished second in the South behind Collins-Maxwell, will return four of its five all-conference honorees, and GMG brings back all of its five all-league selections.
Collins-Maxwell captured first place in the Iowa Star South with a 14-2 record across all conference contests, with BCLUW (10-5), North Tama (9-7) and GMG (7-9) giving chase in the six-team division. Collins-Maxwell and North Tama both boasted two of the senior all-conference picks, so the competition looks to be rich again next summer.
GMG flaunts two repeat first-team all-conference selections in sophomores Riah Boege and Skyler Murty. The Wolverines' battery powered the team throughout the season, with Murty getting the first-team votes at catcher and Boege as a utility pick.
Murty was the fifth-leading hitter in the ISC South, batting .447 with seven doubles, 13 runs scored and four RBIs. She had a .544 on-base percentage and also threw out seven would-be base-stealers, committing just three errors all season.
Boege led the league in strikeouts (190) and innings pitched (98 2/3), going 7-9 with a 2.70 earned run average. She also batted .308 with team-highs of nine doubles, one home run and 10 RBIs. Both Boege and Murty struck out just four times in conference play.
BCLUW had three first-team picks in sophomores Eden Ladehoff and Adelynn Zoske and eighth-grader Wyllo Collins. Ladehoff earned her way back onto the first team after finishing second in the South batting race with a .535 average to go with five doubles, one triple, one home run, seven RBIs and 10 runs scored. She had a .565 on-base percentage and struck out only once during league play.
In the pitcher's circle, Ladehoff finished second behind Boege with 117 strikeouts in just 64 innings pitched, posting a 1.97 ERA with a 0.73 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). Opponents batted just .173 against Ladehoff and .177 facing Boege, leading the conference.
Ladehoff went 5-4 with a save in league play while Collins was 5-1 with a save as well. Collins came away with a 1.27 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 33 innings in the circle, and she also hit .370 with four doubles and 14 RBIs.
Zoske finished league action with a .360 batting average, one double, seven RBIs and five runs scored.
GMG was represented on the all-conference second team by freshmen Natalie Upah and Grace Mathern. Upah batted .239 with two doubles, four RBIs and six runs scored while registering a .967 fielding percentage at first base. Mathern hit .220 with two doubles, four RBIs and eight runs scored. She led the Wolverines in sacrifice bunts (7).
BCLUW junior Brayleigh Gardner accumulated a .348 average in league games, getting three doubles, 10 RBIs and eight runs scored.
Honorable mention selection went to BCLUW senior Leila Wedgwood and GMG freshman Addison Elmore. Wedgwood hit .306 with three doubles, eight RBIs and 12 runs scored while stealing six bases. Elmore batted .114 with two doubles, two triples, four RBIs and four runs scored in league action.
Collins-Maxwell senior Cypress Erickson was named the ISC South's Player of the Year after batting .574 with two doubles, four triples and 10 RBIs. She posted a .617 OBP, scored 30 runs and was 30-for-33 in stolen bases.
North Tama's Madonna Madorin was named the league's Coach of the Year.
