The youth movement is evident in the Marshalltown baseball program. Even the coaches in the Iowa Alliance Conference’s North Division can see it.

Five Bobcat underclassmen were named to the Alliance North’s all-conference squad in a vote of the league’s coaches, led by sophomores Aiden Holmgren and Garrett Thede.

Both first-time all-conference honorees were unanimous selections to the second team — Holmgren as a first baseman and Thede as an infielder — at the conclusion of the season.

A trio of Bobcat freshmen — outfielder Jalen Logsdon, infielder Madden Martin and utility Larrs Schoenfelder — were honorable mention selections as well.

Holmgren and Thede represented the only sophomores on the first or second all-conference teams, while only one other sophomore was named honorable mention. Marshalltown also accounted for three of only four freshmen on the honorable mention list.

Holmgren was moved to the leadoff spot for the Bobcats midway through the season due to his propensity for getting on base. He finished Alliance North play with a .219 batting average, a .324 on-base percentage and a team-leading four stolen bases. Defensively he was among the team leaders with a .885 fielding percentage, playing primarily first base when he wasn’t pitching.

Thede batted .214 in league play but was third on the team with a .405 on-base percentage, moving up to the No. 2 spot in the batting order halfway through the campaign. He shared the team lead with eight walks during Alliance North action, scored six runs and finished with a .844 fielding percentage playing second base, third base or catcher.

Logsdon was the team’s leading hitter with a .333 average, seven runs scored and six RBIs while posting a .400 on-base percentage. The freshman left-hander had an .880 fielding percentage and earned the team’s lone win on the mound during league play. Logsdon (10) and Thede (8 2/3) pitched the most innings during North Division action this season.

Martin manned the left side of the infield at either third base or shortstop for the Bobcats this summer, swinging .241 with a .421 on-base percentage. He scored seven runs and shared the team lead with eight walks.

Schoenfelder finished with a .250 batting average with a team-leading three doubles to go with five RBIs and four runs scored. He posted an .882 fielding percentage while dividing his defensive time between catcher, shortstop and the outfield. He threw out 3-of-21 attempted base-stealers during conference games, which tied for second in the league.

Conference champion Mason City was represented by five players on the 13-man all-conference first team, while runner-up Fort Dodge had four. Ames and Waterloo East both had two first-team selections.
