ANKENY -- The Marshalltown girls' tennis team can't wait to see the returns gained from a daunting schedule.
The Bobcats went 1-2 at Ankeny's Hawkette Invite on Friday, rounding out a six-meet week that included five duals in two days. Marshalltown defeated Southeast Polk, 6-5, before falling to host Ankeny, 8-3, and Indianola, 6-5, one day after Friday's home-opening double dual against Ottumwa and Mason City.
Just 13 hours after leaving the Marshalltown Court Complex on Friday night, the Bobcats (3-4) were back at it again on Saturday in Ankeny.
Marshalltown and Southeast Polk (0-4) split singles play, 3-all, before the Bobcats got the upper hand in doubles competition. Kate Sandvick, Kaelyn Coleman and Hanna Osgood all prevailed individually for MHS, while Sandvick and Coleman scored a 7-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles to give the Bobcats an upper hand.
Southeast Polk picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, but Marshalltown's depth shined through with wins at No. 4 for Devinny Stolzman and Melanie Sardina-Hernandez and at No. 5 for Amairra Johnson and Faith Rasmussen.
Ankeny (2-2) took a 4-2 advantage in singles play and made it stand up with a 4-1 surge in doubles. Sandvick scored Marshalltown's first singles victory, topping Ella Doubleday 9-0 at No. 1, while it was Sandvick and Coleman that captured the team's doubles triumph, 7-2, over Doubleday and Jaleigh Moen.
Osgood added a 5-4 win at No. 3 singles over Mary Johnson.
Marshalltown again split in singles play against Indianola, but the Indians were just good enough to outlast the Bobcats in doubles action.
Sandvick, Coleman and Karolina Cross contributed singles wins for MHS, including another 9-0 win for Sandvick at No. 1. Sandvick improved to 7-0 on the season, having only lost five games to this point.
Sandvick and Coleman scored a 7-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Cross and Sophie Boone edged out a 5-4 triumph at No. 3.
The Bobcats go back out on the road this week with an Iowa Alliance Conference dual at Fort Dodge on Tuesday and the Dallas Center-Grimes triangular on Friday.
