ELDORA -- The Class 1A No. 11 BCLUW volleyball team lost its first set of the season before settling in to sweep a non-conference triangular on Thursday night.
The Comets (2-0) tackled South Hardin 17-25, 25-14, 15-11, before blanking South Hamilton 25-16, 25-20 to claim the sweep.
Raine Sireno scored nine kills, Cambria Wayman had eight and Kennedy Davis seven as the Comets rallied past the host Tigers (1-1). Sally Ramirez racked up 16 assists and Wayman added 10 to the attack.
Brinna Benson led the BCLUW defense with 13 digs, while Davis and Wayman had two blocks apiece. Davis served 15-for-16 with one ace and Benson was 11-for-13 with three aces to lead the Comets.
Against South Hamilton, Davis and Sireno had five kills each, while Ramirez and Wayman had eight assists apiece. Benson and Sireno both had eight digs, and Sireno served 13-for-13 with three aces.
Mustang runners 8th at IFA
HAMPTON -- The East Marshall girls and boys cross country teams both finished in eighth place at the Cadet Invitational hosted by Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday at Maynes Grove near Hampton.
The Mustangs were led out of the gate by senior Sydney Hull, who placed seventh in the girls race with a finishing time of 21 minutes, 24 seconds.
The East Marshall girls totaled 190 points to place eighth out of nine scoring teams. Class 3A No. 19 Clear Lake claimed the team title with 37 points, followed by Humboldt (54) and Aplington-Parkersburg (94). Mason City Newman's Alexis Mujica was the individual champion in 19:17.
Abigail Hendricks was next to cross the finish line for East Marshall, placing 51st. Ashlynn Duncan was just back in 53rd, followed by Lili Smith and CeCe Curtis in 61-62.
The Mustang boys had 185 points to finish eighth out of 11 scoring teams. Host Iowa Falls-Alden was first with 49, 3A No. 19 Clear Lake was second with 56, and South Hamilton was third with 96. IFA's Andrew Herrin claimed individual gold in 17:17.
East Marshall was led by Landen Shoeman, who placed 33rd in 20:22. Lars Dommer and Nathan Frye finished 39-40, Cael Curphy was 46th and Maddux Bennett was 50th.
STC tennis falls to Grinnell
GRINNELL -- The South Tama girls' tennis team picked up a singles win from Presley Vest but an 8-1 loss to host Grinnell in Thursday's WaMac Conference dual.
The Trojans (1-5, 0-1) competed across the board, winning at least two games in all but one match, but Vest's 8-6 victory over Piper Madren at No. 3 singles was all they had to show for it.
Kendra Svacina and Bralynn Rohrs were edged out at No. 3 doubes, 9-7, by Megan DeRidder and Trinity Carlson, and Rohrs lost 8-4 to Carlson at No. 6 singles as Grinnell (1-3, 1-1) got the conference win.
RedTails take sweep over MCC
WATERLOO -- The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team opened Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 loss to Hawkeye CC on Wednesday night, falling 25-13, 25-15, 25-14.
The Tigers (3-2, 0-1) were led by sophomore Morghan Harvey, who hammered out 13 kills on 36 swings. Lillian Mason added four kills, Stella Remer had three and Addie Ratcliff chipped in with two. Setter Isabelle Rawlins had 16 assists.
Defensively, Valentina Arosti led the way with 14 digs and Remer had two solo blocks at the net.
Jenna Scharper led the host RedTails (5-0, 1-0) with 11 kills.
