The Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team scored its first win of the season by beating Iowa Central on Tuesday at the MCC campus, 3-0.
The Tigers (1-2) scored all three of their goals in the first half, including two for Matoi Yanagisawa. Ran Inosaka added a third tally before halftime as MCC netted its first goals of the season.
MCC goalkeeper Torai Matsumoto stopped all three shots he faced, while Iowa Central's Lautaro Real made two saves on five shots on goal.
The loss was the first for the visiting Tritons (1-1).
The Tigers take to the road on Saturday, visiting Council Bluffs for a 6 p.m. showdown with sixth-ranked Iowa Western.
Mustang volleyball splits opener
BROOKLYN -- The East Marshall volleyball team opened the season with a triangular split on Tuesday at BGM.
The Mustangs (1-1) lost in straight sets to Lynnville-Sully (25-19, 25-22) before boucing back to beat the host Bears (25-23, 30-28).
Ashtyn Wheater led East Marshall offensively in both matches, recording seven and six kills, respectively. Senior setter Mya Gould accumulated 23 assists throughout the night. Marisa Cahalan had six kills in the loss to Lynnville-Sully as well.
Natalie Condon contributed two blocks in each match, while Libby Atcher accrued a team-leading 27 digs to lead the defense. Wheater added 12 digs against L-S and Cahalan had 11 more.
Wheater served 20-for-20 with one ace in the split, while Gould was 16-for-16 with three aces. The Mustangs totaled seven service aces in the win over BGM.
G-R denied by ranked foes
FAIRBANK -- The Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team suffered three losses in its season-opening quadrangular, falling to a pair of ranked Class 1A opponents on Tuesday.
The Rebels, polled No. 12 in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union's preseason rankings, fell to No. 2 Wapsie Valley (25-18, 25-11), No. 10 North Tama (25-12, 16-25, 15-9) and Williamsburg (25-14, 25-15).
Jada Cheville led G-R's attack with 19 kills to go with 13 digs and 14-for-13 serving with three aces. Ayla Baer had 10 kills, 11 digs and served 20-for-20 with one ace. Ella Wagner had five kills and a team-high five blocks, while Shakya Bents added four kills, three blocks, eight digs and was 24-for-27 with four aces.
Senior setter Kailey Larsen totaled 36 assists for the day, adding 14 digs and 17-for-17 serving with an ace. Avery Boyer, a senior Libero, led the way with 29 digs.
STC girls tennis tallies win
NEVADA -- The South Tama girls' tennis team toppled Nevada 5-4 on Monday for its first win of the season.
The visiting Trojans (1-4) had claimed just one match win before getting five against Nevada (1-4). Singles wins for Ava Boldt, Presley Vest and Kendra Svacina helped STC break even before getting a pair of closely contested doubles wins to seal the victory.
Mady Boriskey and Boldt teamed up to beat Isabella Betting and Chloe Moffitt 9-8 (10-6) at No. 1 doubles, while Bralynn Rohrs and Svacina notched an 8-6 win over Elle Hadaway and Natalie Mann at No. 3.
Trojan girls out to strong start
WAVERLY -- The Class 2A No. 5 West Marshall girls' cross country team took second out of three participants at the Waverly-Shell Rock Earlybird Invitational on Monday at Wartburg's Max Championship course.
West Marshall junior Dalaney Eldridge took third place to lead her team, clocking in at 21 minutes, 3.75 seconds. Sophomore Zoey Wignall crossed the finish line in fifth in 21:24.96. Kielly Kasal and Ella Randall, both sophomores, finished 10-11, and senior Summer Kurth collected 22nd place.
Decorah, rated 3A No. 10 by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches, won with 21 points to finish ahead of West Marshall (43) and Waverly-Shell Rock (68).
On the boys' side, 3A No. 3 Decorah totaled just 18 points to beat the host Go-Hawks (42) and West Marshall (85).
Aaron Greene was the only Trojan in the top 50, placing 21st but scoring 15th-place points. (19:52.10)
Wolverines win grid opener
BELLE PLAINE -- The GMG football team jumped out to a 24-6 halftime lead and held off Belle Plaine for a 32-28 victory in last Friday's Week Zero contest.
The Wolverines (1-0) got their first season-opening win since 2021, surviving Belle Plaine's second-half comeback to prevail over an opponent other than Meskwaki Settlement School for the first time since 2023.
GMG outgained the Plainsmen 404-255 but lost the turnover game 5-1.
Quarterback Ethan Klemesrud was 11-for-20 passing for 141 yards and a touchdown, and he rushed 16 times for 135 yards and another score. Bodie Hutchinson had 11 carries for 132 yards and two scores, while Easton Sash led the receivers with six catches for 59 yards and a TD.
Klemesrud led the defense as well with 23 tackles, including 18 solo stops and four tackles for loss. Hutchinson had 14 tackles with five for loss, and Caleb Ferch finished with 10 tackles. Jacob Snider pulled down an interception for GMG's only takeaway.
