The Frank Lewis Glick American Legion Post 46 will host its third annual Al Hoop Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Hoop was a Marshalltown native and long-time City Councilman who also spent over three decades coaching a variety of sports in the community and at Marshalltown High School.
At the time of his passing, Hoop was serving as one of Post 46's vice commanders and had been elected to the local executive board. Legion Golf Pro David Bowles said he hopes this tournament will be a fitting way to honor Al's memory.
"Al did so much for the Marshalltown community and the Legion in particular," he said. "Hopefully this tournament will remind folks of the good work Al provided so many of us."
One of the groups that was always at the top of Hoop's list was the Marshalltown Little League where over the years he served as a coach, board member and president. Former MHS head coach Steve Hanson praised Hoop's level of commitment to the Little League and local baseball in general.
"It's hard to believe that we're already on the third annual memorial tournament," Hanson said. "I know Al would be proud to have his name on any event that benefits the community and baseball in general."
Proceeds from last year's event went to help finance child safety seats through the Marshalltown Police Department and to heat and operate the AL Hoop Hitting Facility at the Little League complex. The existing structure was refurbished to allow Marshalltown youth a chance to train and enhance their baseball skills during the winter months.
Like the first two events, this tournament will be a four-person best shot 9-hole affair. Cost is $30, which includes the golf, a cart and lunch. Those entrants who get registered prior to Wednesday, Sept. 9, will also receive a complimentary commemorative T-shirt. In order to ensure smooth play, the tournament will be a 10 a.m. shotgun start and capped at the first 20 groups to sign up.
Registration forms are available from Bowles at the Legion Pro Shop and all registrations must be submitted at the Legion Pro Shop. Hanson said he hopes people have a fun day.
"Al loved golf, but you don't have to be a good golfer to come out and have a great time," he said. "Plus you'll be supporting a couple of wonderful causes in the process."
