DES MOINES -- Both teams played in the same elements, but only the Bobcats played through them.
The Marshalltown girls' tennis squad stormed past Des Moines Lincoln on Thursday, taking down the Railsplitters 10-1 in an Iowa Alliance Conference dual meet in the harrowing heat and humidity.
The Bobcats (6-4, 4-2) all but put the Rails (4-4, 2-3) away with wins in five out of six singles contests, and a doubles sweep did the rest.
Marshalltown's No. 1 singles player Kate Sandvick improved to 10-1 this season with a 6-1, 6-0 shellacking of Margaret Theis, setting the table for a dominant start for the Bobcats in singles play.
Kaelyn Coleman captured a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Greta Dietrich at No. 2; Hanna Osgood got a 6-3, 6-1 win over Pippa Hopkins at No. 3; and Karolina Cross claimed a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Neriah Daggett at No. 4.
"Kate, Kaelyn, Hanna and Karolina really played well through the heat," said MHS head coach James Christensen. "They showed some real tennis IQ when it was needed."
Trista Bratland also picked up a win at No. 6 singles as well despite trailing a set (7-5, 3-3) when April Htoo retired due to the heat.
Sandvick and Cross teamed up for just the second time this season and scored their first doubles win together, taking down Theis and Dietrich at No. 1, 6-1, 6-3.
"The doubles lineup is really starting to take shape," Christensen said. "Cross and Sandvick are finding their chemistry and the rest of the pairs are starting to solidify."
Coleman and Osgood took down Hopkins and Daggett in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-3, while Sophie Boone and Bratland tallied a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3 over Evalina Thammarath and Sa'Miyah Ellison.
The Nos. 4 and 5 doubles teams for Marshalltown matched the most lopsided wins for the day. Melanie Sardina Hernandez and Devinny Stolzman raked in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Savannah Khamvilay, while Faith Rasmussen and Kennedy Goldman earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Jocelyn Brown and Ellie Anderson at No. 5.
It marked the first varsity tennis win for Goldman.
Marshalltown is back at home next week with a dual against Des Moines Roosevelt on Tuesday and a double dual including Union Community and Waverly-Shell Rock on Thursday, Sept. 10.
