STORY CITY -- The Marshalltown volleyball team went 1-3 against a cast of smaller schools on Monday at Roland-Story's Norsemen Invitational Tournament, beating Class 4A Gilbert in straight sets.
The Bobcats topped the Tigers (21-14, 24-22) in the third of four rounds of round-robin action. Marshalltown fell to 3A No. 10 Roland-Story (21-12, 21-13), South Hardin (21-17, 10-21, 15-9) and Hampton-Dumont-CAL (21-11, 17-21, 15-13).
MHS (6-16) was led offensively by Bella Avise, who piled up 27 kills on the night. Brooklyn Smith finished with 16 kills, Kendall Brummel had nine and Lorelai Holloway had eight. Setter Lauren O'Neal totaled 57 assists.
Defensively, Morgan Hilderbrand led the back row with 29 digs. Avise finished with 18, Collins Grant had 17, O'Neal 12 and Kendall Klinge 11. Smith and Holloway had three blocks apiece.
Hilderbrand turned in the top serving performance as well, going 34-for-37 with a team-leading seven aces. Avise was 30-for-31 with four aces, O'Neal was 27-for-31 with five aces, and Grant was 21-for-22 with three aces.
