Metro Classic catches up to Bobcat netters

PLEASANT HILL -- The Marshalltown volleyball team ran into some top competition at Southeast Polk's Metro Classic Tournament on Saturday, going 0-4 in the event.

The Bobcats (3-8) were bested in pool play by host Southeast Polk (21-7, 21-9), Class 5A No. 12 Waukee (21-17, 21-8) and Sioux City East (21-13, 21-10) before getting bounced from bracketed play by Oskaloosa (21-16, 21-19).

Marshalltown was led on the day by Brooklyn Smith, who finished with 11 kills to go with three blocks, 11 digs and 11-of-13 serving with two aces. Bella Avise totaled 10 kills and 19 digs, and setter Lauren O'Neal compiled 25 assists, 20 digs and a team-best 28-of-31 serving with three aces.

Freshman libero Collins Grant totaled 26 digs to lead the MHS defense, while Morgan Hilderbrand had 23 more. Kendall Brummel contributed two blocks, while O'Neal and Lorelai Holloway had one each.
