MHS maneuvers through the mud at Heartland Classic

PELLA -- The Marshalltown cross country teams endured the muck and the mud and made it through the 21st Heartland Classic with the stains to show for it Saturday at the Central College Cross Country Course.
The Bobcat boys finished 23rd out of 28 scoring teams while the girls were 19th out of 20, taking to the event despite sloppy and slippery course conditions in the rain on Saturday.
The Marshalltown boys were led by sophomore Costin Piscitelli, who took 54th place with a time of 18 minutes, 56 seconds. Michael Downs was 117th in 19:55, followed by Connor Faas in 237th (21:40), Thomas Stanley in 263rd (22:01) and Austin Wright in 357th (23:25).
There were 588 runners in the boys' race, which was won by Cole Carrizales of Cedar Rapids Prairie in a time of 16:56. Dallas Center-Grimes claimed the team title with 86 points, holding off Pleasant Valley (116) and Waukee (140). The Bobcats finished with 651 points.
On the girls' side, Marshalltown finished just back of Dowling (509) in 18th place and ahead of Lawrence, Kan. (530) in the 22-team meet.
Bobcat freshman Lillian Heil clocked in with 67th place and a time of 22:25 to lead the squad. Grace Whitmore took 91st (23:41), followed by Naysa Rottink in 103rd (24:10), Mallory Meyeraan in 128th (26:05) and Eiley Chamberlain in 133rd (26:47) out of 146 runners.
Emmy Stubbendeck of Waukee Northwest edged out Tenley Heidgerken of Dallas Center-Grimes for the individual girls title, finishing in 19:06.4 and 19:07.1, respectively. Northwest claimed the team crown as well with 66 points ahead of Pella (74) and DCG (111).
Marshalltown returns to action at the Steve McDermott Invitational on Tuesday at Maytag Park in Newton.
