MASON CITY -- The Marshalltown volleyball team shook off a rough weekend with a solid victory over Mason City, beating the host Riverhawks 3-1 on Tuesday night.
The Bobcats (4-8) improved to 4-1 in Iowa Alliance Conference play with the 25-10, 25-15, 15-25, 26-24 triumph to help shrug off an 0-4 weekend at Southeast Polk's Metro Classic Tournament.
Marshalltown handed Mason City (3-5, 3-1) its first Alliance defeat, driven by a balanced attack. Brooklyn Smith scored 11 kills to lead the MHS offense, while Bella Avise had eight kills and Avery Polley had seven. Lorelai Holloway chipped in with four kills and setter Lauren O'Neal added three kills to go with her 27 assists.
Smith stonewalled the Riverhawks at the net, coming away with nine of the team's 14 blocks in the four-set win. O'Neal contributed three blocks while Holloway and Avise had one apiece. O'Neal's 13 digs were a team high as well, while freshman Collins Grant and Avise each had eight digs.
The Bobcats served up 11 aces on the night, getting three apiece from O'Neal and Avise. O'Neal was 21-for-22 serving and Avise was 18-for-20 to drive Marshalltown's biggest runs of the match. Smith was 15-for-16 with two aces and Morgan Hilderbrand was 8-for-12 but with two aces. Anela Holloway pitched in with an ace on 5-of-7 serving.
Marshalltown returns to action with another Iowa Alliance match on Thursday, Sept. 24, as Fort Dodge visits the Roundhouse for a 7:15 p.m. matchup.
