Mustangs claim Colfax-Mingo tourney

COLFAX -- The East Marshall volleyball team tallied four consecutive wins to claim the title at the Colfax-Mingo Tournament on Saturday.
The Mustangs (5-1) marched through pool play with wins over Nodaway Valley (21-17, 21-16) and Baxter (21-15, 21-15) before beating the host Tigerhawks (18-21, 21-17, 15-8) and then Iowa Valley in the championship match (21-17, 17-21, 15-12).
Senior setter Mya Gould led the way for East Marshall with 61 assists to go with 22 digs, eight kills and 39-of-42 serving with four aces. Ashtyn Wheater piled up 25 kills on the day, Marisa Cahalan had 20, Natalie Condon 15 and Deliah Conner six.
Defensively, Libby Atcher tallied 36 digs while Wheater had 34 and Gould 22. Cahalan had 20 digs and a block, while Condon led at the net with three blocks and Conner had two. Quinn Burns chipped in 12 digs.
Condon also served 34-for-35 with five aces, Wheater was 19-for-19 with five aces, and Kiela Wolf was 14-for-15 with four aces. Cahalan and Burns had four aces apiece and Atcher added three more. The Mustangs totaled 29 aces on the day, including 10 in the win over Colfax-Mingo.
Comets get two wins
BONDURANT -- The BCLUW volleyball team went 2-4 at Bondurant-Farrar's Skip Anderson Classic on Saturday, closing both pool play and bracket play with wins.
The Comets (4-4) went 1-2 in pool play, falling to Winterset (21-4, 21-14) and Roland-Story (21-17, 21-17) before beating Urbandale (21-18, 21-13). In bracket play, BCLUW fell to Lake Mills (21-13, 21-17) and North Tama (no score available) before beating Cardinal (19-21, 21-11, 15-10).
Kennedy Davis and Cambria Wayman led the Comet attack with 21 kills apiece, Raine Sireno had 18 more and Kylie Pekarek contributed 13. Sally Ramirez racked up 45 assists and Wayman had 19 more.
Defensively, BCLUW was led by Pekarek with seven blocks and Brinna Benson with 17 digs. Pekarek served 32-for-33 with four aces, Ramirez was 33-for-34 with three aces, and Davis was 31-for-34 with three aces. Wayman had a team-high five aces, Sireno served 26-for-28 with an ace, and Benson was 23-for-24 with an ace.
Field goal lifts Mustangs past Comets
CONRAD -- A fourth-quarter field goal by Eli Burns broke a 6-all tie and lifted the East Marshall football team to a 9-6 victory over BCLUW in Friday's season-opening game in Conrad.
The Mustangs (1-0) got outgained 299-200 in total offense and overcame two turnovers to take the fourth-straight win in the series and seventh of the last eight.
A 35-yard field goal by Burns proved to be the deciding score.
East Marshall quarterback Jaxson Boswell was limited to 4-of-19 passing for 93 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Burns hauled in two passes for 63 yards, one of which being a 63-yard touchdown. Gavin Gaschler had two receptions for 41 yards.
Boswell was the Mustangs' leading rusher with 44 yards, and Kaden Grant got 30 yards.
Trent Criswell led the East Marshall defense with 8.5 tackles, including three quarterback sacks, and fellow sophomore Carson Curtis had seven stops.
BCLUW's offense got 207 yards on the ground, led by Eathan Petermeier carrying 15 times for 106 yards. Ethan Shadlow had 15 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Elliot McIntyre was 6-for-16 passing for 63 yards, and Maddin Helms completed his only pass for 29 yards to Petermeier.
Beau Towne had seven tackles with two quarterback sacks to pace the Comet defense. Avery Schipper added six stops and McIntyre made five tackles with three sacks. Petermeier and Will Feldpausch both intercepted a pass.
East Marshall hosts Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in Week 2, while BCLUW visits West Fork on Friday night.
STC stops Vinton-Shellsburg 21-17
VINTON -- The South Tama football team outlasted Vinton-Shellsburg for a 21-17 win in Friday's season-opening contest, making it three-straight in the series.
The Trojans beat the Vikings for the eighth time in their last nine meetings, outgaining their hosts 307-257. STC quarterback Ryan Brant threw a pair of touchdown passes to Michael Henry and Eric Medina rushed for another.
Brant finished 6-for-13 for 141 yards with two TDs and two interceptions, while Izak Schroeder carried 17 times for 80 yards. Medina added 12 totes for 61 yards, while Henry hauled in three passes for 101 yards in all, including a 79-yard touchdown.
Ethan Page and Kyle Youngbear led the South Tama defense with seven tackles, while Alfredo Villa and Lakyr Peska both had interceptions.
Vinton-Shellsburg ran for 213 of its 257 yards, getting 91 yards from Isaiah Schneider and 86 yards and a touchdown from Eli Petersen.
Rebels rack up first win
GARWIN -- The Class 1A preseason No. 12 Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team got its first win of the season, beating host GMG in Thursday's triangular in Garwin.
The Rebels (1-4) fell to BGM in straight sets, 25-16, 25-22, before bouncing back to beat the Wolverines 25-17, 25-10, in their finale.
G-R senior setter Kailey Larsen distributed 33 assists on the night while contributing 15 digs, four blocks, four kills and 11-for-11 serving with one ace.
Jada Cheville paced the Rebel attack with 15 kills, chipping in 12 digs, three blocks and 17-for-18 serving with a team-high four aces. Ella Wagner added seven kills and five blocks. Ayla Baer led the defense with 18 digs to go with nine kills and 14-of-15 serving with three aces.
Shakya Bents pitched in with five kills and 20-for-23 serving with an ace, and Avery Boyer made 12 digs. Kinzie Hemann had five kills, two blocks and served 13-of-16 with two aces.
