DUNKERTON -- The Class 1A No. 9 BCLUW volleyball team went 3-2 at the Dunkerton Tournament on Saturday to improve to 16-9 for the year.
The Comets fell against another ranked team -- 1A No. 11 Cedar Ridge Christian -- in the opening round, 21-17, 21-16. BCLUW bounced back with a win over Oelwein, 21-10, 21-6, before falling to Starmont, 21-15, 21-18. The Comets closed with wins over East Buchanan (21-7, 21-7) and Oelwein again, 21-7, 21-7.
The BCLUW offense was led by Raine Sireno with 27 kills. Kennedy Davis contributed 22 kills, Kylie Pekarek had 20 kills and Cambria Wayman added 16. Setter Sally Ramirez totaled 82 assists on the day.
Brinna Benson led the defense with 40 digs and was 18-of-18 serving with two aces. Sireno had 27 digs and was 26-for-30 with two aces. Ramirez made 25 digs, two blocks and was 35-of-37 with four aces. Wayman made 16 digs, three blocks and was 28-for-35 with six saves, while Pekarek served 36-for-39 with three aces. Addison Moeller and Pekarek both had a team-leading four blocks. Davis added 14 digs and was 23-for-26 with two service aces.
MCC netters roll to home-court victory
The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team won for the fourth time in its last five outings, sweeping John Wood CC on Saturday by scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-15.
The Tigers (7-5) got a team-leading 12 kills from Morghan Harvey, while Lillian Mason, Stella Remer and Amira Cowell came away with six kills apiece. Isabelle Rawlins finished with 31 assists.
Cowell led the MCC defense with nine digs, while Rawlins and Lesly Yismel Valentin Marte added eight each. Remer had two of the team's five blocks.
The loss was the fourth-straight for John Wood (6-11).
Trojan tennis team falls to Xavier in regionals
CEDAR RAPIDS -- The South Tama girls' tennis team saw its season come to an end in a 5-0 loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier in Saturday's Class 1A Region 1 quarterfinals.
The host Saints (12-1) scored five shutout wins over STC (1-8) to advance to face Grinnell in Monday's regional semifinals.
South Tama's only game wins in the dual came at No. 5 singles, where Bralynn Rohrs was defeated 6-3 in the first set. The match was still in play when the team contest was decided by Xavier's fifth singles win in the best-of-nine format.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck runs away from Dons
GLADBROOK -- The Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team outscored Don Bosco 25-0 over the final three quarters for a 39-14 non-district win over the Dons on Friday night at "The Pit."
The Rebels (5-0), rated sixth in 8-Man in the latest Radio Iowa poll, rushed for all six of their touchdowns. Treyvon Herron finished with 23 carries for 301 yards and four touchdowns, including a 73-yard dash to paydirt. Quarterback Bennett Sieh had six totes for 40 yards and two scores, while also going 8-for-14 passing for 70 yards.
Brayden Utter and Herron both had 7.5 tackles to lead a G-R defense that has allowed a state-best 5.6 points per game. Chad Gutknecht added 5.5 stops and two interceptions as the Rebels topped Don Bosco (3-2) for the third year in a row.
Mustangs run down by Midland, 27-13
LE GRAND -- The East Marshall football team sustained its fourth-straight defeat, falling 27-13 to Midland in Friday's Class A District 4 clash.
The Mustangs (1-4, 0-3) scored a season-high 13 points but couldn't keep up with the visiting Eagles (3-2, 2-2), who rushed for 321 of their 388 yards of total offense.
Rylan Graves carried 32 times for 166 yards for Midland, and Dane Ballou added seven carries for 51 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles completed just one pass, but it went 67 yards to Tyler Gaunt for a TD.
East Marshall quarterback Jaxson Boswell was 11-for-24 passing for 145 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Austin Crandon on an 8-yard score. Eli Burns had six catches for 89 yards while Crandon had two grabs for 28. Boswell added a short touchdown run for the Mustangs, who turned the ball over three times.
Gavin Gaschler led the East Marshall defense with nine tackles, while Burns and Deagan Madison had 8.5 tackles apiece. Boswell added seven tackles and an interception, and Trent Criswell also made seven stops.
