CONRAD -- The BCLUW volleyball team dedicated Tuesday's Iowa Star Conference match to their principal who recently passed away, and the Comets came away with an inspired performance in a five-set win over North Tama.
The 11th-ranked Comets clipped the No. 4 Redhawks, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21, 13-25, 16-14, to claim the conference showdown between ranked Class 1A teams in thrilling fashion on a night when BCLUW needed it. The Comets dedicated the match to principal Josh Tack, who was killed in an ATV accident a month earlier.
BCLUW (7-7, 1-1) got a balanced attack with 13 kills by Raine Sireno, 11 from Kennedy Davis and 10 for Cambria Wayman. Sophomore setter Sally Ramirez totaled 38 assists.
Defensively, Addison Moeller made five blocks at the net and Kylie Pekarek had four more. Ramirez led with 27 digs while Brinna Benson and Wayman had 24 each. The Comets charted just three against against the Redhawks but served 92-of-98 as a team.
Alaney Sienknecht had 20 kills and Lily Sell 17 to lead the Redhawks (11-6, 2-1).
Rebels withstand Mustangs
LE GRAND -- The East Marshall volleyball team took a set from Gladbrook-Reinbeck for the first time in a long time, but it wasn't enough to propel the Mustangs to victory.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck (3-8, 1-1) got its first NICL West Division win with a 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22 triumph over East Marshall (9-3, 0-2) on Tuesday night.
East Marshall last took a set from G-R in 2018, but the Rebels have won 16-straight matches in the series.
Marisa Cahalan led East Marshall with 14 kills, Ashtyn Wheater had 10, Natalie Condon nine and Kiela Wolf eight. Setter Mya Gould came away with 41 assists. Condon and Gould had three blocks apiece to lead the defense, while Libby Atcher made 31 digs.
Atcher also served 18-for-20 with five of the Mustangs' nine aces.
STC stands up to CCA
TIFFIN -- The South Tama volleyball team gave Class 4A No. 2 Clear Creek Amana a tussle in Tuesday's WaMaC Conference opener, falling 25-13, 26-24, 25-19.
The Trojans (9-6, 0-1) got a balanced attack, led by Stella Zmolek with six kills. Maylee Rucker and Scout Ridout had five kills apiece, while Paisley Bro had four more. Rucker led STC with 10 assists and Layla Pansegrau had eight.
Kenzi Boriskey paced the Trojan defense with three blocks, while Bro had a team-high 10 digs and Brylee Nelson added eight more. Pansegrau had three of the team's seven aces, going 8-for-9 behind the line. Rucker was 7-for-10 but with two aces.
Julia Schlarbaum had 16 kills and Bailey Simpson 12 for CCA (11-1, 1-0).
GMG bounced by Braves
MONTEZUMA -- The GMG volleyball team fell in a non-conference match at Montezuma, 25-13, 25-8, 25-12, on Tuesday night.
Arianna Pierce led the Wolverines (2-7) with nine kills, and Kate Mussig chipped in three. Setter Joleesa Vazquez totaled 15 assists in the loss. Brayla Davis and Skyler Murty both had one block, while Mussig and Riah Boege led the defense with eight digs apiece.
GMG served 30-for-35 as a team with three aces, led by Vazquez going 8-for-8 with an ace.
Sydnee Burgess led Montezuma (9-6) with 16 kills and two blocks.
