ELDORA -- The East Marshall volleyball team took a game from South Hardin for the first time in eight years, but it wasn't enough to propel the Mustangs to victory.
The host Tigers took Monday's NICL West Division match from East Marshall in four sets, prevailing 25-16, 24-26, 25-17, 25-12.
Emma Minteer had 18 kills and Lucy Anderson added 12 for South Hardin (4-5, 1-0).
East Marshall was paced by Ashtyn Wheater's nine kills. Marisa Cahalan had seven, Natalie Condon added six and Deliah Conner contributed five. Mya Gould totaled 25 assists.
Libby Atcher led the Mustang defense with 26 digs and was 12-of-12 serving with one of the team's nine aces. Wheater was 10-for-10 with three aces, while Kiela Wolf was 11-for-11 with two aces.
Trojans toppled by Madrid
STATE CENTER -- The West Marshall volleyball team fell to 0-4 on the season with a 3-0 loss to Madrid in Monday's non-conference home opener for the Trojans.
The visiting Tigers won 25-16, 25-21, 25-13, sparked by 13 service aces.
Ellie Andrews led West Marshall with seven kills, Evalyn Clark had four and Alayna Frederick got three. Makaylie Tarbell tallied nine assists and Frederick had six more.
Kinley Johnston led the Trojan defense with two blocks, while Olivia Henderson had 17 digs. Andrews added 10 digs. Frederick also served 11-of-12 with one ace, while Henderson was 8-of-10 with one ace.
No. 6 Reivers rally past MCC
COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Sixth-ranked Iowa Western scored twice in a span of a minute in the second half to top the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team 2-0 on Saturday.
The Reivers (3-0-0) got goals from Taiyo Kushida at the 77:56 mark and Quélou Ayemi at 78:59, coming just 1:03 apart to account for the only scores in the match.
Iowa Western outshot MCC 12-2, with Tigers goalkeeper Torai Matsumoto coming up with three saves. Neither of MCC's shot attempts were on net against Fausto Delgado.
Marshalltown (1-3-0) visits Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minn., for a 5 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
Bobcats edged by Roughriders
DES MOINES -- The Marshalltown volleyball team suffered heartbreaking defeat in its season-opening match, falling 3-2 to host Des Moines Roosevelt on Thursday, Aug. 27.
The Roughriders (1-0, 1-0) claimed the first two sets before the Bobcats (0-1, 0-1) bounced back to win the next two. In the deciding fifth set, Marshalltown led 14-11 but couldn't close it out as Roosevelt rallied up a 5-0 run to claim the contest, 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, 16-14.
Brooklyn Smith and Bella Avise had 11 kills apiece to pace the MHS offense. Avery Polley contributed five kills, Morgan Hilderbrand and Lorelai Holloway had three apiece, while Kendall Brummel and Lauren O'Neal chipped in two each. O'Neal totaled 28 assists at the center of the attack.
Six Bobcat defenders had double-digit digs: Collins Grant (14), Avise (14), Hilderbrand (13), Smith (12), O'Neal (11) and Polley (10). Smith led at the net with three blocks while Hilderbrand and O'Neal had one each.
Marshalltown had 15 aces but 19 service errors in the loss. O'Neal served 16-for-21 with six aces; Avise was 20-for-21 with 2 aces; Hilderbrand was 12-for-15 with three aces; Smith was 13-for-16 with two aces, and Polley was 8-for-11 with two aces.
