SPORTS SHORTS: Mustang volleyball competes at STC Invite

TAMA -- The East Marshall volleyball team went 1-3 at the South Tama Invitational on Saturday, falling in the first round of bracketed play.

The Mustangs (13-10) narrowly fell to host South Tama in the first round, 21-18, 21-19, before beating Belle Plaine in a barnburner, 21-19, 19-21, 17-15. Lisbon took down East Marshall in the next round, 21-11, 21-17.

In bracketed action, Belle Plaine got redemption and eliminated the Mustangs, 18-21, 21-15, 15-12.

East Marshall was led on the day by Ashtyn Wheater, who had 16 kills to go with 22 digs. Natalie Condon totaled 13 kills and a team-leading seven blocks, while Marisa Cahalan had 10 kills and a team-high 29 digs. Kiela Wolf chipped in seven kills, while setter Mya Gould amassed 49 assists.

Libby Atcher came away with 26 digs for the defense, Gould had 25 and Wolf 18, while Deliah Conner contributed three blocks. Gould was the team's top server, going 37-for-37 with four aces, while Wheater was 31-for-32 with four aces and Cahalan was 29-for-34 with four aces. Condon went 25-for-25 with two aces and Atcher was 18-for-22 with four aces.

West Marshall netters blanked

NEVADA -- The West Marshall volleyball team was unable to pick up a win at the Nevada Tournament on Saturday, falling to 3-25 for the season.

The Trojans were taken down by Council Bluffs Lewis Central (21-10, 21-3), Class 4A No. 2 Norwalk (21-5, 21-9), Des Moines Roosevelt (21-4, 21-8) and host Nevada (21-11, 21-12).

West Marshall was led on the day by Ellie Andrews, who had six kills to go with 11 digs. Lillian Renze finished with five kills and a team-high four blocks, while Alayna Frederick, Evalyn Clark and Kinley Johnston had three kills apiece. Frederick led the way with 11 assists and Makaylie Tarbell added 10 more.

Olivia Henderson paced the Trojan defense with 27 digs, while Clark contributed 14 and Andrews 11. Clark was 6-for-7 serving with the team's lone ace, while Henderson and Frederick both served 12-for-12 on the day.

STC football stuffed by PCM

MONROE -- The South Tama football team remained winless in Class 2A District 7 play after a 42-3 loss to PCM on Friday night.

The visiting Trojans (2-3, 0-2) were held to 181 yards of total offense in the loss. Eric Medina accounted for 104 yards on 27 carries to lead the STC offense, while quarterback Ryan Brant was 7-for-13 passing for 52 yards. Eli Cruikshank had two receptions for a team-high 33 yards.

Cruikshank's 26-yard field goal was the team's only points.

PCM (2-3, 2-0) rushed for 198 yards and four touchdowns, led by Bodhi Bonnett going for 99 yards and two scores. The Mustangs also got a 56-yard punt return for touchdown by Gavin Gibbs and a late 22-yard fumble return for touchdown by Jaden Houser.

G-R's Pifkin leads locals at Grundy Center meet

GRUNDY CENTER -- Caleb Pifkin finished in seventh place to lead the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys' cross country team to an 11th-place finish at the Sam Iverson Invitational hosted by Grundy Center on Thursday at Town & Country Golf Club.

Pifkin placed with a time of 17 minutes, 27 seconds, to lead the Rebels as the only coverage-area team in attendance to field at least five runners. Caleb Bowser was 44th in 19:37, Tavin Ruden took 86th in 21:01, Mason Wrider was 88th in 22:05, and Braiden Sager rounded out the team scoring in 92nd (22:23).

The Rebels took 11th place over Valley Lutheran on the sixth-score tiebreaker as Campbell Gramer's 86th-place finish was three positions ahead of Valley Lutheran's sixth runner.

BCLUW got a top-20 finish from Tommy Hinderhofer, who was 18th in 17:59. Olin Hupfeld was 34th in 18:54, Harrison Schiebel scored 71st in 20:43, and Manny Hinderhofer placed 100th in 23:29.

Brayton Darter placed 98th as GMG's lone runner, crossing the finish line in 23:04.

Class 3A No. 12 Bondurant-Farrar won the team title with just 35 points, beating 2A No. 11 Jesup (70) and 2A No. 20 Dike-New Hartford (91) among 15 scoring teams.

On the girls' side, Chloe Switzer of BCLUW was 33rd to lead the locals in a time of 21:54. Grace Mathern of GMG was 45th (22:30), and Colbie Fevold of Gladbrook-Reinbeck placed 95th (26:25).
