SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs claim another tourney title

NORTH ENGLISH -- The East Marshall volleyball team won its second weekend tournament of the season, storming to the top of the heap at the English Valleys Invitational on Saturday.
The Mustangs improved to 9-2 with wins over Sigourney (21-11, 21-15), Hillcrest Academy (21-15, 21-19), WACO (21-9, 21-12) and finally over host English Valleys (22-25, 25-17, 15-12) to claim the championship.
East Marshall got a balanced attack to win the day, led by Ashtyn Wheater's 23 kills. Marisa Cahalan had 21 kills, Natalie Condon contributed 14, Kiela Wolf had 10 and Deliah Conner five. Senior setter Mya Gould compiled 65 assists to eclipse 1,000 for her career.
The Mustang defense was led by senior libero Libby Atcher, who made 50 digs on the day to go over 500 for her career. Cahalan had 17 digs, Wheater 14, Quinn Burns 11 and Gould 10 to contribute defensively, while Condon came away with three blocks. Wolf, Conner and Gould had two blocks apiece.
Gould was also the team's top server for the day, going 37-for-38 with seven aces, while Wheater was 34-for-35 with four aces. Cahalan went 27-for-34 with a whopping nine aces, and Wolf was 29-for-31 with six aces. The Mustangs totaled 32 aces against only 18 service errors on the day.
BCLUW fourth in own invite
CONRAD -- The BCLUW volleyball team finished fourth at its own Comet Round-Robin Tournament on Saturday, going 2-3 on the court.
The Comets (6-7) started with wins over South Tama (23-21, 21-13) and Belle Plaine (21-17, 21-9) before falling to Iowa Falls-Alden (21-17, 13-21, 15-7), Benton Community (21-11, 23-21) and Montezuma (21-17, 18-21, 15-13).
For the day, sophomore Kennedy Davis compiled 24 kills to lead the Comet attack, Raine Sireno had 22 and Cambria Wayman 19. Sophomore setter Sally Ramirez totaled 65 assists while also making 29 digs and serving 29-for-29 with an ace.
Senior libero Brinna Benson led the BCLUW defense with 53 digs on the day, while Wayman had 35, and Davis and Sireno both had 24. Addison Moeller led at the net with four blocks while Kylie Pekarek contributed two blocks, 13 kills, 10 digs and 26-for-30 serving with an ace.
Wayman went 38-for-42 at the service line with a team-high five aces, and Sireno was 35-for-35 with four aces.
Comet runners score 13th
BELMOND -- The BCLUW cross country teams got a pair of 13th-place finishes at the Belmond-Klemme Invitational on Tuesday at Belmond Country Club.
The Comets' lone female runner -- Chloe Switzer -- scored 13th place in a time of 22 minutes, 32.7 seconds. Mason City Newman's Alexis Mujica, ranked second in Class 1A, won the race in 18:47.0.
Manson-Northwest Webster, rated eighth in 1A, won the girls' team title with 83 points in the 11-team meet.
On the boys' side, BCLUW's Tommy Hinderhofer took 13th in a loaded field that included four ranked 1A teams and nine rated runners. Hinderhofer finished in 18:40.3, less than two minutes behind meet champion Ezra Almelien of North Butler (16:47.0).
Olin Hupfeld came in 35th for the Comets (19:45.1), and Harrison Schiebel was next to cross in 67th place (21:32.5). Manny Hinderhofer was 98th (24:24.6) for BCLUW.
GMG suffers first defeat
CLARKSVILLE -- Clarksville broke open a close game with a big second quarter on its way to a 59-20 triumph over the GMG football team in Friday's 8-Man District 6 opener.
The host Indians (1-1) scored 38 points in the second period alone to take a 44-14 lead into the halftime break. Clarksville leaned on senior quarterback Nathan Moon, who rushed 18 times for 164 yards and four touchdowns while also completing 4-of-8 passes for 81 yards and two more scores.
Boden Miller took a kickoff back 66 yards for a score and Clarksville also collected four GMG fumbles in the win.
GMG (2-1) totaled 289 yards of offense with 206 of them coming through the air. Quarterback Ethan Klemesrud was 14-for-23 with a touchdown, connecting with Easton Sash for a 65-yard scoring strike. Sash finished with eight receptions for 123 yards, Jacob Snider had a 45-yard grab, and Jacoby Woodbury had three catches for 30 yards.
Klemesrud also rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown and led the Wolverine defense with 11.5 tackles. Sash had an interception, Caleb Ferch recovered a fumble, and Snider piled up seven tackles.
