LE GRAND -- The East Marshall volleyball team finished fourth out of six teams at its own Mustang Round-Robin Tournament on Saturday, going 2-3 on the day.
Two of the three losses for East Marshall (11-6) came against ranked teams. The Mustangs opened with a win over West Marshall, 21-15, 21-13, before falling in a three-set thriller to HLV-TC, 19-21, 21-19, 15-12.
Class 2A No. 6 Hudson topped the Mustangs 21-15, 21-8, but East Marshall bounced back to beat Vinton-Shellsburg 19-21, 21-15, 15-10. Benton, ranked 12th in 4A, won the finale 21-10, 21-9.
Leading the way offensively for East Marshall was Ashtyn Wheater, who piled up 26 kills to go with 36 digs and 22-of-23 serving with two aces. Marisa Cahalan contributed 19 kills, 19 digs and 37-of-43 serving with a team-high six aces. Natalie Condon chipped in 14 kills, a team-leading seven blocks and 35-of-36 serving with five aces.
Setter Mya Gould accrued 59 assists on the day, adding 22 digs and 42-of-44 serving with four aces. Libby Atcher led the defense with 39 digs and added four aces, while Kiela Wolf helped out with five blocks, 15 digs and 24-of-25 serving and an ace.
West Marshall (1-15) scored its first win of the season, a 21-16, 23-21 triumph over Vinton-Shellsburg, but statistics were unavailable as of press time.
Petermeier's 4 TDs drive Comets
CONRAD -- The BCLUW football team exploded for three second-quarter touchdowns on its way to a 36-6 Homecoming victory over Lake Mills in Friday's Class A District 2 showdown.
Quarterback Elliot McIntyre threw three touchdown passes, all to Eathan Petermeier, as the Comets (1-2) piled up 380 yards of offense. McIntyre was 8-for-12 for 140 yards, while Petermeier made four grabs for 85 yards. Tommy Miller added three receptions for 42 yards.
Petermeier added 22 carries for 182 yards and another score, and Maddin Helms had a short TD plunge as well.
Ethan Shadlow led the Comet defense with six tackles, while Helms and Avery Schipper had 5.5 each. Beau Towne made five tackles as the unit held Lake Mills (0-3) to 236 yards of offense thanks to three takeaways. Avery Schipper had an interception and a fumble recovery, and Jordan Schlumeister fell on a loose ball as well.
STC shoots down Falcons
TAMA -- The South Tama football team beat Louisa-Muscatine for the second year in a row, outscoring the Falcons 40-26 on Friday night in non-district play.
Both teams scored 20 points in the fourth quarter alone to turn the game into a shootout after STC led 20-6 at the half.
South Tama (2-1) rushed for 379 of its 487 yards of total offense, led by Izak Schroeder's 22 carries for 198 yards and three touchdowns. Jet Chyma scored a 58-yard touchdown run and Eli Cruikshank added a short TD plunge for the Trojans. Quarterback Ryan Brant was 6-for-11 for 87 yards with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Michael Henry. Cruikshank had three catches for 70 yards, while Brant rushed for 88 yards.
Kyle Youngbear led the STC defense with 14 tackles, including one for loss, and Henry had eight stops. Edwyn Perez added six tackles, while Alfredo Villa had an interception and Ethan Page recovered a fumble.
Louisa-Muscatine's Gaije Carter ran 27 times for 190 yards and four touchdowns and had five receptions for 117 yards.
Trojans succumb to R-S
STORY CITY -- The West Marshall football team closed out non-district play with a 28-3 loss to Roland-Story on Friday night. The Trojans scored first, but the host Norsemen notched 28 unanswered from there.
West Marshall got 192 yards of offense with quarterback Blayk Hart going 6-for-15 passing for 80 yards but with three interceptions. He was the team's leading rusher as well, getting 78 yards on 20 carries. Teegun Edler had two receptions for 61 yards.
A 22-yard field goal for Wilson Buckley provided the only points for the Trojans (1-2).
Joe Kielmen led the Trojan defense with nine tackles, Drake Whitaker had 6.5 tackles, while Buckley and Beckham DeSotel had six stops apiece. Connor Yakel picked off a pass as well.
Roland-Story (2-1) got 308 yards of offense led by quarterback Colin Willis, who was 16-for-26 for 201 yards and a touchdown. Fiston Carlson carried 18 times for 110 yards and two TDs.
Mustangs blanked by Lynx
LE GRAND -- The East Marshall football team fell 56-0 to North Linn in its Class A District 4 opener on Friday night.
The visiting Lynx (3-0, 2-0) tallied two touchdowns in each quarter of their win, piling up 420 yards of total offense. Quarterback Jackson Nielsen was 11-for-17 for 230 yards and four touchdowns, with Will Sommerfelt hauling in four catches for 110 yards and three scores.
East Marshall (1-2, 0-1) was limited to 112 yards of offense. Kaden Grant ran for 34 yards on 12 carries, while quarterback Jaxson Boswell added 26 yards. Boswell was 7-of-15 for 50 yards through the air, with Eli Burns making two grabs for 25 yards.
Boswell led the Mustang defense with 6.5 tackles, including four for loss. Deagan Madison had 5.5 tackles and Burns added five stops. Gavin Gaschler had 3.5 tackles and an interception.
Herron, Rebels rock Royals
GLADBROOK -- Treyvon Herron rushed for three touchdowns, returned a punt for another and had a kickoff return for a score during the Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team's 72-8 trouncing of Colo-NESCO on Thursday night.
The Rebels claimed the 8-Man District 6 contest by taking a 53-0 lead into the halftime locker room on the heels of Herron's 57-yard kickoff return touchdown following a G-R safety.
Herron rushed eight times for 80 yards and three TDs and returned a punt 59 yards for another.
Bennett Sieh was 6-for-6 passing for 113 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Laken Thesing (31 yards) and Devin Boldt (22) on scoring strikes. Macklin Clark added two touchdown runs and Chad Gutknecht had another for G-R (3-0, 2-0).
Mason Heise had 6.5 tackles to lead the Rebel defense, Brayden Utter had 5.5 stops, and G-R forced three turnovers.
Noah Matteson rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown to lead Colo-NESCO (2-1, 1-1).
Tigers notch home win
The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team snapped a four-match slide with Thursday's 3-0 triumph over Northwest Iowa CC, 27-25, 25-13, 25-20.
The host Tigers (4-4, 1-3) earned their first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference win as well as their first home-court victory of the season. Morghan Harvey had a team-high 12 kills to pace the MCC attack, while Stella Remer had nine kills and setter Isabelle Rawlins had ive. Rawlins finished with 33 assists and four of the Tigers' seven service aces.
Lesly Yismel Valentin Marte paced the MCC defense with 23 digs and Amira Cowell had 13 more. Harvey, Rawlins and Addie Ratcliff had one block each.
Trojans gallop amongst the best
AMES -- The Class 2A No. 5 West Marshall girls' cross country team finished fifth out of 19 scoring teams at the Gilbert Invite on Thursday at Iowa State University, trailing only four ranked 3A programs.
The Trojans totaled 195 points to finish behind 3A No. 1 Pella (26), No. 2 Des Moines Christian (98), No. 6 Sioux Center (111) and No. 16 Clear Creek Amana (190). West Marshall finished ahead of eight more ranked teams, including 3A No. 10 North Polk (201) and 2A No. 7 Van Meter (218).
Dalaney Eldridge led the Trojans with a 16th-place finish in a time of 20 minutes, 2 seconds. Kielly Kasal came away 37th (21:07), Ella Randall was 40th (21:11), Zoey Wignall took 42nd (21:15) and Harper Blackburn finished 64th (22:14).
On the boys' side, Aaron Greene led the Trojans in 107th place (19:25).
Mustangs run at Colfax
COLFAX -- The East Marshall girls' cross country team came in ninth and the boys were 11th at the Colfax-Mingo Invite on Thursday at Kelly Fields.
The Mustang girls totaled 208 points to finish ahead of three scoring teams. Sydney Hull led the squad with an 11th-place finish, clocking in at 22 minutes, 54 seconds. Abigail Hendricks (38th), Ashlynn Duncan (48th), CeCe Curtis (64th) and Hayden Braye (79th) also scored for the Mustangs.
The East Marshall boys finished 11th with 271 points, just one back of host Collins-Maxwell (270) in the 14-team meet. Landen Shoeman crossed the finish line in 35th place in 20:39 to lead East Marshall, followed by Nathan Frye (52nd), Maddux Bennett (63rd), Lars Dommer (65th) and Wyatt Anderson (74th).
