NEW HAMPTON -- In a battle of contrasting styles, the West Marshall football team's ground game outlasted New Hampton's air attack for a 21-12 win in Friday's non-district clash.
The Trojans (1-1) rushed for 253 of their 324 yards, led by Blayk Hart with 23 carries for 152 yards and a touchdown. Turner DeRossett got 58 yards and Joe Kielman collected 51 yards and two touchdowns.
Riley Hanford completed 3-of-5 pass attempts for 53 yards, and Hart had one completion for 18 yards. Teegun Edler making one grab for 34 yards and Drake Whitaker had two catches for 31 yards.
Hanford led the Trojan defense with eight tackles, Whitaker had an interception, while Edler and Beckham DeSotel both recovered fumbles.
New Hampton quarterback Kye Rausch was 10-for-19 for 214 passing yards with two touchdowns, connecting with Ashton Pitz on a 79-yard scoring strike and Carson Laures on a 62-yard TD toss. The Chickasaws (1-1) ran for just four yards.
Rockets run away from Mustangs
LE GRAND -- Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont outscored the East Marshall football team 30-0 after halftime on its way to a 44-6 victory over the host Mustangs on Friday night.
The Rockets (2-1) led 14-6 at the intermission before breaking free. EBF finished with 460 yards of total offense, including 431 on the ground. Zane Mullenix rushed 22 times for 116 yards and four touchdowns to lead the charge.
East Marshall (1-1) got 90 of its 125 yards through the air, with Jaxson Boswell connecting with Eli Burns for a 68-yard touchdown pass. Burns finished with two grabs for 75 yards, while Boswell was 5-for-17.
Gavin Gaschler and Carson Curtis led the Mustang defense with nine tackles apiece, Burns had seven stops and Kaden Grant added 6.5 tackles.
Trojan harriers win at Pine Lake
ELDORA -- The West Marshall girls' cross country team introduced an eighth-grader into its varsity lineup and ran away with the title at the Pine Lake Run on Thursday at Pine Lake Country Club.
The Class 2A No. 11-ranked Trojans scored 40 points to pace an eight-team field that featured six ranked squads. West Marshall was followed by 2A No. 6 Jesup (52), 1A No. 8 Grundy Center (92), 2A No. 16 Aplington-Parkersburg (100), 1A No. 9 Hudson (101), 2A No. 17 Dike-New Hartford (116), East Marshall (162) and Janesville (244).
Dalaney Eldridge led West Marshall with a runner-up finish, taking second in 21 minutes, 44.4 seconds, just back of Jesup's Jordyn Bergman (21:41.9). Kielly Kasal came in fifth (22:47.5), eighth-grader Harper Blackburn was eighth (23:12.0), Zoey Wignall 11th (23:49.2) and Ella Randall 14th (24:00.9).
East Marshall's Sydney Hull finished fourth (22:22.6); BCLUW was led by Chloe Switzer in 17th (24:39.0); and GMG's Grace Mathern placed 27th (26:15.0). Gladbrook-Reinbeck's Colbie Fevold finished 62nd (31:38.2).
On the boys' side, G-R sophomore Caleb Pifkin won the meet in a time of 19:02.1. Jesup, ranked 13th in 2A, took the team title with just 30 points, while East Marshall was fourth (102) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck was sixth (143).
East Marshall's five scoring seniors all finished between 16 and 32: Landen Shoeman was 16th (20:56.2); Nathan Frye was 23rd (22:10.5); Cael Curphy 25th (22:31.3); Maddux Bennett 30th (22:54.1); and Lars Dommer 32nd (23:15.4).
BCLUW, one runner short of being a scoring team, was led by Tommy Hinderhofer in 15th place (20:55.8). Olin Hupfeld was 22nd (21:49.5) and Harrison Schiebel was 29th (22:52.3).
Aaron Greene paced West Marshall with a 19th-place finish (21:04.0). G-R's Caleb Bowser came in 24th (22:28.0) and Campbell Gramer was 44th (24:52.6), while GMG's Braylon Darter took 45th (25:09.0).
