Up-and-down day for MHS netters

It was an up-and-down day for the Marshalltown girls' tennis team, but not for the weather.
The Bobcats hosted Boone and Des Moines Hoover for a triangular at the Marshalltown Court Complex, but there was no happy medium for all attendees. With temperatures reaching 90 degrees and a heat index around 100, it was borderline unbearable.
That's how the day started on the court, too, for MHS.
Boone blistered the Bobcats 11-0, winning nearly every match by a lopsided margin. Marshalltown's top challenge came from the No. 5 doubles team of Airi Hoven and Faith Rasmussen, who fought to within 8-6 of Rylee Eatock and Emma Peebler.
The Toreadors (8-1) tallied the rest of their wins by allowing no more than three games to their Bobcat foes, finishing off Marshalltown in less than two hours.
After Boone dispatched of Des Moines Hoover, the Bobcats returned to the courts to take on the Huskies.
For a day that didn't mingle between ends of the spectrum, the final dual meet was no different.
Marshalltown (5-4) marched to an 11-0 victory over the Huskies (1-8), winning four of six singles bouts in shutout fashion as well as one of the doubles contests too.
"The juxtaposition between No. 2 Boone and Hoover was pretty evident," said MHS head coach James Christensen. "We played some of our best tennis of the year and the girls controlled the controllables against Boone, but they were just the better team.
"Against Hoover our main battle was the heat. Sophie Boone really rallied despite not feeling the best and capped off a 6-0 start in singles."
The suffocating conditions were cause for concern throughout the day, but Marshalltown mustered up enough grit to get through the end.
In singles play, the Bobcats got 6-0, 6-0 wins from Kate Sandvick at No. 1, Kaelyn Coleman at No. 2, Hanna Osgood at No. 3 and Trista Bratland at No. 6.
Karolina Cross captured a 6-3, 6-1 win over Say Paw at No. 4 singles, while Sophie Boone battled back for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 triumph over Noelle Saunders at No. 5.
Coleman and Osgood notched a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Sylviah Ho and Lar Wah at No. 1 doubles, while Boone and Bratland got a 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Hoven and Rasmussen again represented well at the No. 4 spot, scoring a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Emma Petersen and Malaz Nubie, and the Bobcats received a forfeit from Hoover at No. 5.
The last match on the court came from the No. 3 doubles contest as Marshalltown's Devinny Stolzman and Melanie Sardina Hernandez had to comeback for a three-set victory over Saunders and Ruth Miner, 4-6, 6-3, (10-5).
Marshalltown returns to Alliance action on Thursday with a trip to Des Moines Lincoln.
