Greazel going to state

3 min read

PANORA -- It might not have been the Bobcats' year, but it just might be Joe Greazel's.

The Marshalltown junior left no doubt in his quest to get to the Class 4A boys' state golf tournament by winning his district meet's medalist honors on Monday at Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

The Bobcats finished ninth out of 14 teams in the tournament, which took the top three finishers to state as well as the top two individuals not on a qualifying team.

Instead of leaving it to chance, Greazel left the course as the meet champion.

Greazel shot a 1-under-par round of 71 to secure the top spot by three strokes. He opened his round with a birdie on the par-3 16th hole, added another on the par-5 fourth and carded just one bogey on the par-3 13th.

"Joe was in complete control of his game," said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. "He ran in a long putt for birdie on his first hole of the day and kept it rolling from there.

"With the way he's played at the conference and district meets, he's shown that he can compete with anyone. He's had the chance to play Davenport Country Club in summer tournaments, so that'll be a nice advantage."

Add in 15 pars and he was the only player to finish at or under par for the tournament.

Greazel is Marshalltown's first boys' state golf qualifier since Ty Faltys in 2024 and the first Greazel since his brother Grant got there for the third time in 2021.

It was no doubt a bittersweet moment for the Bobcat junior, who a week earlier lost his grandfather David Adland at the age of 74.

Marshalltown was unable to secure the program's first state team berth since back-to-back visits in 2017-2018.

Johnston won the district crown with a 302, Norwalk was second at 303 and Waukee Northwest claimed the third team qualifier spot with a 306. Ankeny (322), Indianola (323) and Des Moines Roosevelt (323) gave chase, while Urbandale (330), Ames (332), Marshalltown (332) and Ottumwa (334) filled in behind them.

Ames took eighth place from the Bobcats on the strength of the fifth-score tiebreaker.

A week removed from shooting a 363 in their first trip to Lake Panorama, Marshalltown took 31 strokes off its introductory round. It just wasn't enough to get to state.

Junior Bryson Payne posted the Bobcats' next-best round of the day with his 84, while senior Jacob Seberger shot 88 in his final meet. Juniors Gavin Misek and Korben McKibben both carded 89 to complete the team scoring, and senior Parker Christen closed with a 95.

"Team-wise, we played much better than last week, but we still needed to clean up a lot of things," Johnson said. "There's not a lot of margin for error at Lake Panorama and we put ourselves in some tough positions that resulted in some big numbers."

Greazel was joined in individual qualification by Ankeny's Drake Shadwick, who shot 4-over 76 to score seventh place individually. The top 16 individual finishers were represented by the three qualifying teams, Greazel and Shadwick.

The 4A fall state golf meet is Oct. 12-13 at Davenport Country Club in Pleasant Valley.
