PLEASANT VALLEY -- Joe Greazel's state golf debut left a lot to be desired, but he's still got Day 2 to get it done.
Greazel, a Marshalltown High School junior, shot an 8-over-par round of 79 on Monday at Davenport Country Club to align in a tie for 37th place after the opening day of the Class 4A boys state golf tournament.
Greazel teed off on the 10th hole, birdied the 11th, but couldn't duplicate the scoring through the rest of his round. A pair of double bogeys dotted his card and caused him to slide back in the standings heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
"Joe drove it well off the tee and was in good position to attack throughout the day," said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. "He left some shots out there on the greens. They're a challenge to get a good read on what putts will do, especially for someone who hasn't played [the course] a ton. Much like Elmwood, it's a course where local knowledge can save a lot of strokes."
Greazel's playing partners on the first day -- Colton McCollaugh of Dubuque Senior and Jay McCausland of Waterloo West -- both shot 74 to stand in a tie for ninth place going into Tuesday's final round.
Greazel will tee it up on the 10th hole again Tuesday at 10:31 a.m., joining Henry Birt of Iowa City High and Brooks Andersen of Iowa City Liberty. All three golfers share 37th place in the field of 81 golfers going into the last 18 holes.
"If he can continue to put himself in position to score, I fully expect him to climb the leaderboard on Day 2," Johnson said.
