MHS rules at Mike Augustine Classic

DES MOINES -- The Marshalltown cross country teams both claimed titles at the 71st Mike Augustine Classic on Thursday at the James W. Cownie Soccer Park, beating all of the Des Moines metro schools in the process.

The Bobcat boys had five finishers inside the top-10 to take the team championship with just 27 points, coming in ahead of Des Moines Lincoln (58), Hoover (59), North (98) and East (140).

MHS sophomore Costin Piscitelli took the runner-up spot in the race, finishing in 17 minutes, 21 seconds, to score the silver medal. Des Moines North's Marvin Mejicano-Barahona was the meet medalist in 16:30.

Michael Downs scored third place for the Bobcats, bagging bronze in 17:56. Thomas Stanley took sixth 18:32, Conner Faas was seventh in 18:45, and Elliot Kodis came in ninth (19:02) to complete the team scoring.

Adam Bouhssine (16th, 20:21) and Jaden Schwartz (17th, 20:25) were next to cross for the 'Cats.

The Marshalltown girls made off with five top-10 finishers as well, scoring only 29 team points to take the title ahead of Hoover (49), Lincoln (65) and East (94).

MHS freshman Lillian Heil was the meet runner-up with a time of 20:58, trailing only Ella Frost of Des Moines Lincoln (20:47). Bobcat sophomore Grace Whitmore was fourth in 21:26, while freshman Naysa Rottink took sixth in 21:40.

Mallory Meyeraan (8th, 23:04) and Lily Johnson (9th, 23:16) finished consecutively to complete the Bobcat scoring. Elise Brott, Eiley Chamberlin and Airi Hoven finished 12-14 for MHS.
