SPORTS SHORTS: Comets can’t keep up with Knights

MASON CITY -- The BCLUW football team fell behind and couldn't catch Mason City Newman in a 41-16 loss to the host Knights in Friday's Class A District 2 clash.

Newman (4-2, 3-1) rushed for 349 of its 480 yards of total offense, averaging 9.4 yards per carry to keep the Comets at bay. Max Robbins rushed 18 times for 217 yards and three touchdowns for the Knights, while Westly Cole had five receptions for 61 yards and two TDs.

BCLUW (1-5, 1-4) had a 51-yard touchdown run called back in the first half and fell behind 14-0 at the break. The Comets rushed for 213 yards led by Eathan Petermeier's 12 carries for 104 yards. Quarterback Elliot McIntyre had 12 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown, and he also tossed a 15-yard TD pass to Petermeier. McIntyre finished 6-for-16 for 61 yards passing, and Avery Schipper had two catches for 34 yards to lead the receivers.

Schipper led the Comet defense with seven tackles, Aaron Pencil had 4.5 stops, and Patrick McCready had four tackles and an interception.

Mustangs sent to decisive defeat

WINTHROP -- East Buchanan scored 32 points in the first quarter of an eventual 46-7 victory over visiting East Marshall in Friday's Class A District 4 football game.

The Buccaneers (5-1, 4-1) scored their fourth consecutive win by scoring all of their points in the first half. East Marshall (1-5, 0-4) scored its only touchdown in the fourth quarter in suffering its fifth-straight loss.

Mustang quarterback Jaxson Boswell got the team's only tally, scoring on an 18-yard touchdown run, and led the team with nine carries for 50 yards. He was 14-of-30 passing for 108 yards with four interceptions.

Eli Burns led the East Marshall receivers with six catches for 44 yards, Kaden Grant had six grabs for 40 yards, and Gavin Gaschler added two receptions for 24 yards.

Carson Curtis led the Mustang defense with 9 tackles, Burns had 7.5 stops and Gaschler 7.

East Buchanan piled up 520 yards of total offense, with Tristan Cornell carrying 22 times for 272 yards and five touchdowns. Quarterback Keenan Pals was 10-for-15 for 160 yards and a score.
