SPORTS SHORTS: Comets crowned conference champs

CEDAR FALLS -- The BCLUW volleyball team locked down an undefeated Iowa Star Conference South Division title on Thursday night by sweeping Valley Lutheran and Collins-Maxwell in a league doubleheader.

The Comets (23-11, 7-0) crushed Valley Lutheran to start the night, winning 25-4, 25-6, 25-3, and then clobbered Collins-Maxwell, 25-3, 25-7, 25-7.

Against Valley Lutheran (0-14, 0-6), BCLUW was led by Raine Sireno with eight kills. Cambria Wayman and Kylie Pekarek had six kills apiece, and setter Sally Ramirez finished with 19 assists.

BCLUW served 70-for-71 in the match, racking up 24 aces. Brinna Benson was 24-for-24 with 10 aces, Sireno had five aces and Ramirez four.

Sireno scored another 10 kills to lead BCLUW in the beating of Collins-Maxwell (2-19, 1-6). Wayman had seven kills and 15 assists, while Kennedy Davis came away with six kills and Pekarek five. Madison Hauser and Adelynn Zoske pitched in four kills apiece.

Davis led the defense with 11 digs and Benson had nine. The Comets served 73-for-75 in this match, piling up 14 aces with Benson and Ramirez recording four each.

Schirmer wins again for STC

SEARSBORO -- South Tama sophomore Max Schirmer won his second consecutive cross country race with a 24-second cushion at the Montezuma Invite on Thursday at the Big Springs Shooting Complex near Searsboro.

Schirmer crossed the finish line first in 17 minutes, 30 seconds, to distance himself from Zach Veiseth of North Mahaska (17:54) and Albia's Ben Wilson (17:55).

South Tama took third out of 10 scoring teams in the event, winning a sixth-score tiebreaker over English Valleys after both teams totaled 101 points. Albia won with 72 and BGM was second at 75.

Henri Martinez-Alvarado finished in 12th place for STC in 18:34, and Kyle Johnson-Whitefish was 17th in 18:59. Nolan Arp (33rd, 19:56) and Riley Stubbs (44th, 20:53) rounded out the team scoring, while Jonathan Lambert's 53rd-place finish (21:42) was one spot ahead of the sixth runner for English Valleys to break the tie for third in the final standings.

GMG's lone runner, Braylon Darter, was 58th in 22:15.

On the girls' side, GMG sophomore Grace Mathern placed 15th with a time of 23:08.

South Tama sent just three runners, led by eighth-grader Adalyn Graff in 22nd place (24:21). Livia Smith (39th, 26:32) and Katelynne Brant (40th, 26:38) finished consecutively.

Trojans tripped up by Comets

JEWELL -- North Polk got immediate revenge over the West Marshall girls' cross country team by beating the Trojans for the title at the South Hamilton Invitational on Thursday at Jewell Golf & Country Club.

The Class 3A No. 10 Comets came in second to West Marshall at Monday's North Polk Invite, but they reversed course in Thursday's rematch. North Polk scored 44 points to pace the 10-team field, finishing ahead of 2A No. 3 West Marshall (67), 1A No. 7 Collins-Maxwell (102), 1A No. 3 Madrid (104) and 1A No. 18 ACGC (139) among others.

West Marshall junior Dalaney Eldridge led her team with a seventh-place finish, clockin in at 20 minutes. Kielly Kasal came in 14th (20:29), Zoey Wignall was next in 16th (20:45), followed by Harper Blackburn in 18th (20:56) and Ella Randall in 24th (21:25).

East Marshall, which placed ninth with 218 points, was led by Sydney Hull in 12th position (20:22). BCLUW's Chloe Switzer was 33rd in 22:15.

On the boys' side, West Marshall sophomore Aaron Greene was the top local finisher by taking 19th place in 18:12. Tommy Hinderhofer of BCLUW bagged 23rd place (18:25), and Landen Shoeman of East Marshall claimed 32nd (18:47). BCLUW's Olin Hupfeld finished 35th.

East Marshall was ninth out of 11 scoring teams with 196 points. Shoeman was joined in scoring by Lars Dommer (44th, 19:24), Nathan Frye (51st, 19:42), Wyatt Anderson (52nd, 19:50) and Hayden Boles (57th, 20:10).

Harrison Schiebel of BCLUW was 59th in 20:11.
