JESUP -- The East Marshall volleyball team split a triangular against a pair of North Iowa Cedar League foes on Tuesday, beating host Jesup 2-1 before falling to Class 2A No. 7 Hudson 2-0.
The Mustangs (14-11) opened with a hard-fought win over the J-Hawks, prevailing 23-25, 25-21, 15-13. Ashtyn Wheater had seven kills to lead the attack, Natalie Condon finished with six and Marisa Cahalan had five. Setter Mya Gould totaled 19 assists.
Condon had a team-high three blocks, Gould had two, and libero Libby Atcher led the defense with 21 digs. Cahalan was 12-for-13 serving with three of the team's five aces.
Against Hudson (17-5), East Marshall was ousted 25-22, 25-12. The Mustangs had just eight kills, led by Wheater with three and two each from Gould and Deliah Conner. Condon, Conner and Kiela Wolf had two blocks apiece, and Atcher again led with 18 digs. Condon was the team's top server, going 8-for-8 with one ace.
Tigers tipped by No. 17 DMACC
BOONE -- The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team put up a fight but ultimately fell to 17th-ranked DMACC on Tuesday, 25-11, 25-20, 25-19.
The host Bears (11-11, 5-2) were led by 10 kills from Malia Clayburg, while three others -- Lacey Taylor, Alli Sheldahl and Ramsey Johnston -- had six kills apiece.
MCC (7-6, 2-5) was led by nine kills from Morghan Harvey. Lillian Mason tallied five kills, Stella Remer had four kills, while Amira Cowell and Addie Ratcliff had three apiece. Setter Isabelle Rawlins totaled 23 assists and also contributed nine digs to the defense. Lesly Yismel Valentin Marte led the Tigers with 15 digs, and Remer had a team-best three blocks.
Pifkin 9th at Jesup super-meet
JESUP -- Gladbrook-Reinbeck sophomore Caleb Pifkin placed ninth out of 231 runners at the Jesup Invitational on Tuesday at Jesup Golf and Country Club, finishing with a time of 17 minutes, 34 seconds.
The monstrous meet included 32 teams with the Rebels coming in 20th out of 25 scoring squads. Benton Community won the title with 47 points and Denver was second with 58. G-R scored 530 as a team.
Caleb Bowser came in 110th for the Rebels in 20:24, followed by Tavin Ruden (180th, 22:50), Braiden Sager (181st, 23:07) and Campbell Gramer (188th, 23:22).
On the girls' side, G-R's Colbie Fevold finished 205th out of 216 runners in 28:35.
STC competes at Williamsburg
WILLIAMSBURG -- South Tama sophomore Max Schirmer scored 40th place to lead the Trojans at the Williamsburg Invitational on Tuesday at the Williamsburg Recreation Center.
Schirmer finished in a time of 18 minutes, 5 seconds, to lead a trio of Trojan runners. Henri Martinez-Alvarado was 97th in 19:41 and Kyler Johnson-Whitefish finished 136th in 22:43.
There were 20 scoring teams on the boys' side, led by Mount Vernon-Lisbon with 80 points.
Host Williamsburg won the girls' team title with 68 points, while South Tama was one of 23 participating squads.
Eighth-grader Adalyn Graff led STC in 107th place (25:13), followed by Piper Sawyer (117th, 26:23), Katelynne Brant (130th, 28:05) and Anna Ahrens (138th, 29:42).
Wolverines handle Collins-Maxwell
MAXWELL -- The GMG football team improved to 4-2 this season with a 56-6 shellacking of Collins-Maxwell on Friday in 8-Man District 6 play.
The Wolverines (4-2, 1-2) outscored the Spartans 44-0 over the final three quarters. Quarterback Ethan Klemesrud finished with 25 carries for 197 yards and four touchdowns while also going 4-for-6 passing for 87 yards and two more scores. Bodie Hutchinson rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown, while Easton Sash hauled in touchdown receptions of 40 and 21 yards.
Klemesrud, the state's leading tackler, led the GMG defense with 13 stops. Jacob Snider totaled 8.5 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and had an interception. Hutchinson added seven stops, while Cullen Elmore returned one of his two fumble recoveries 10 yards for a touchdown.
Collins-Maxwell (1-4, 1-2), coached by Marshalltown High School graduate Carson Williams, totaled just 51 yards of offense.
