SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans take South Hardin title

ELDORA -- The Class 2A No. 3 West Marshall girls' cross country team cruised to a title at the South Hardin Invitational on Saturday, placing all five scoring runners in the top-10 at Pine Lake Country Club.

The Trojans totaled just 22 points to distance themselves from a field of only four scoring squads. Baxter was second with 54 points, East Marshall third at 65, and Cedar Ridge Christian fourth at 95.

West Marshall was led on this day by eighth-grader Harper Blackburn, who placed third individually with a time of 21 minutes, 48.1 seconds. Dalaney Eldridge was next across in fourth (21:52.9), while Kielly Kasal came in fifth (21:55.6). Zoey Wignall was ninth (22:34.4) and Ella Randall 10th (23:28.1) to round out the scoring.

Colo-NESCO's Elizabeth Erickson was the first runner to the finish line, clocking 20:50.9 for the individual crown. East Marshall's Sydney Hull was second in 21:24.2.

The Mustangs also got scoring contributions from Faith Pardekooper in 19th (25:49.4), Abigail Hendricks in 22nd (26:30.0), CeCe Curtis in 26th (27:05.0) and Gracelyn Goodrich in 35th (29:14.5).

GMG's lone runner, Grace Mathern, came in 15th in 25:06.5, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck's Colbie Fevold finished 30th in 29:50.5.

South Tama's foursome was paced by one of its three eighth-graders in Adalyn Graff, who came in 17th in 25:26.3. Piper Sawyer scored 25th (27:33.9), Katelynne Brant took 26th (27:34.1) and Anna Ahrens was 31st (30:08.6).

Comets reach Columbus semifinals

WATERLOO -- The BCLUW volleyball team was defeated by the other ranked squads it faced on Saturday at the Waterloo Columbus Invitational, settling for a semifinal appearance and a loss to the eventual tournament champion.

The Class 1A No. 12 Comets (20-11) went 2-1 in pool play to advance to bracketed action. BCLUW beat Vinton-Shellsburg to start the day, 21-14, 15-21, 21-5, before falling to 2A No. 10 Iowa City Regina, 23-21, 21-13. The Comets clinched advancement by dispatching host Waterloo Columbus, 21-12, 21-9.

In the final four, BCLUW was ousted by Iowa Star Conference rival North Tama as the 1A No. 6 Redhawks moved on with a 25-20, 25-23 triumph. North Tama went on to defeat Iowa City Regina in the title match.

BCLUW was led on the day by Kylie Pekarek, who paced the team with 22 kills, five blocks and 27-of-31 serving with two aces. Cambria Wayman contributed 19 kills, 25 digs and 25-of-26 serving with two aces, while Kennedy Davis had 18 kills and 14 digs.

Raine Sireno tallied 16 kills and 18 digs while serving 25-for-26 with two aces, and setter Sally Ramirez racked up 72 assists on the day. Ramirez also chipped in 11 digs, three blocks and was 23-of-24 serving with two aces. Defensively, Brinna Benson led the Comets with 33 digs, and Addison Moeller made five blocks.

Schirmer leads STC at South Hardin

ELDORA -- South Tama sophomore Max Schirmer claimed the individual crown and the Trojans were the highest finishing local boys team at the South Hardin Invitational on Saturday at Pine Lake Country Club.

Schirmer was first to the finish line in a time of 18 minutes, 8.5 seconds, holding off South Hamilton senior Jesus Garcia (18:14.0) for the title. Gladbrook-Reinbeck sophomore Caleb Pifkin was third in 18:54.1.

South Hamilton claimed the team title with 52 points, followed by Cedar Ridge Christian (79) and Baxter (98). South Tama was fourth at 103, followed by Woodward Academy (107), East Marshall (108), Gladbrook-Reinbeck (162) and host South Hardin (181).

Schirmer was joined on the STC roster by two more top-20 finishers in Henri Martinez-Alvarado (19th, 20:22.4) and Kyler Johnson-Whitefish (20th, 20:23.8). Riley Stubbs (41st, 22:29.4) and Nolan Arp (44th, 22:39.9) rounded out the Trojans' roster.

West Marshall sophomore Aaron Greene led a trio of Trojan runners by finishing sixth in 19:29.1.

East Marshall's all-senior lineup was led by Landen Shoeman in 14th (19:57.9). Wyatt Anderson took 24th (21:01.1), Lars Dommer was one spot back in 25th (21:09.7), Hayden Boles was 32nd (21:41.3), and Nathan Frye (36th, 22:06.5) edged Cael Curphy (37th, 22:11.9) for the team's final scoring spot.

Behind Pifkin, G-R's top contributor was Caleb Bowser in 26th place (21:19.7).

GMG's lone runner, Braylon Darter, took 50th position in 24:25.9.

Trojans toppled by Centerville

TAMA -- The South Tama football team couldn't keep Centerville from pulling away for a 40-6 victory over the Trojans on Friday night in Class 2A District 7 action.

The host Trojans (2-4, 0-3) were within 6-0 after the first quarter but trailed 22-0 by halftime and 40-0 through three quarters.

Centerville (6-0, 2-0) leaned on its balanced offense to take the triumph. Running back Makoa Kaleponi piled up 31 carries for 184 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Mack Murdock had two short TD runs. Murdock was 8-for-11 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns as the Big Reds racked up 437 yards of total offense.

South Tama was limited to 147 yards of offense and turned the ball over four times, including an interception that was returned 50 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Ryan Brant was 11-for-14 for 97 yards with three interceptions, connecting with Izak Schroeder twice for a team-leading 58 yards.

Eric Medina rushed 19 times for 58 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown for STC.

Kyle Youngbear, 2A's tackles leader, posted 14 stops to pace the Trojans. Jet Chyma added seven stops and Edwyn Perez had 6.5 tackles.
