CEDAR RAPIDS -- The Marshalltown girls' tennis team saw its season end just shy of the regional finals, coming up two wins of the state tournament.
The Bobcats were bounced in Thursday's Class 2A Region 3 semifinals by second-seeded Cedar Rapids Washington (8-5), falling 5-2 at Coe College's Clark Racquet Center.
The meet was originally scheduled for Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids, but wet weather pushed the dual back a day and forced it indoors.
Marshalltown (9-5) made it through singles play, pushed through by wins from Kate Sandvick at No. 1 and Trista Bratland at No. 6, but Cedar Rapids Washington stopped the Bobcats' advances there. A quick 6-0, 6-2 victory for the Warriors at No. 3 doubles marked the end for MHS.
Sandvick, who will play next week in the 2A state singles tournament in Waterloo, dispatched Emma Brown 6-1, 6-2, to give the Bobcats their first win. Washington claimed the next four bouts in straight sets before Bratland gave Marshalltown its last breath.
Bratland rallied past Lauren Mohasci, 2-6, 6-4, (10-8), to prolong the meet, but it didn't last. Bratland and Sophie Boone were bounced by Shaylin Munson and Viana Alexandrescu 6-0, 6-2, to end the best-of-nine contest.
