The BCLUW volleyball team claimed the Iowa Star Conference's South Division title for the third time in the last four years, and the Comets were recognized for it.
Senior outside hitter Raine Sireno was named the division's Co-Player of the Year, sharing the honor with North Tama sophomore Alaney Sienknecht after helping to lead BCLUW to the Iowa Star South crown.
Sireno finished third in the conference with 75 kills (3.1 kills per set) during league play to pace the Comets to a 7-0 finish in South Division action. A five-set thriller over North Tama was the deciding contest.
BCLUW's Megan Yantis was voted as the division's Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the selection with Baxter's duo of Kay Wing and Dan Bucklin.
Sireno trailed only Sienknecht (212) with 181 kill attempts during divisional play, finishing with a .293 kill efficiency that ranked fourth in the South. She also contributed 2.1 digs per set and also served at a 90.7 percent efficiency with 16 aces in league play.
Sireno was one of three BCLUW players picked to the nine-person all-South first team, joined by sophomores Kennedy Davis and Sally Ramirez. Davis, an outside hitter, was fifth in the league with 64 kills (2.7 kills per set), kill attempts (166) and kill efficiency (.283). Ramirez, the Comets' setter, finished with a division-best 190 assists (7.9 assists per set), was eighth at 2.8 digs per set, and led the conference with a 99 percent serve efficiency, going 96-for-97 with 16 aces.
The first-team selection marked a promotion for Ramirez, who was a second-team selection last season.
GMG, which finished fourth out of eight teams in the Iowa Star South, had two first-team honorees in juniors Arianna Pierce and Riah Boege. Pierce, an outside and middle hitter for the Wolverines, finished second in the South Division with 79 kills (3.3 kills per set) and also came in ranked fifth with 22 service aces.
Boege, a defensive specialist, led the league with 81 digs (3.4 digs per set) and was one of GMG's most efficient servers, going 87-for-95 (91.6 percent) during conference play.
Pierce, too, was promoted from last year's second-team selection.
BCLUW added three second-team picks in seniors Brinna Benson and Kylie Pekarek and junior Cambria Wayman, marking the second all-conference honor for each.
Benson, a libero, finished third in the Iowa Star South with 78 digs (3.2 per set) and serving efficiency, charting 98.1 percent (103-for-105) during conference play. She was ninth in the division with 19 service aces as well.
Pekarek, a middle hitter, placed third in the league with eight total blocks while also posting 37 kills to tie for eighth in conference action. She also served with 92 percent efficiency, going 46-for-50 with five aces.
Wayman, a right-side hitter, was third on the Comets with 49 kills during divisional play, chipped in 34 assists and 49 digs, and tied for sixth in the league with 20 service aces.
GMG's second-team honoree was sophomore setter Joleesa Vazquez, who was second only to Ramirez with 165 assists (6.5 per set) during South play. She was second on the Wolverines with 40 digs and tied Ramirez atop the conference by serving 99 percent (96-for-97) with 14 aces.
