Marshalltown CSD advance Social-Emotional Learning and support services
The Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD) continues its strong commitment to meeting the needs of our students, helping them succeed in school and beyond. At the heart of this effort is our approach to Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), a program designed to equip students with the skills to understand and manage emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible choices. These essential skills, developed over time, help students become resilient and productive members of their school communities and, ultimately, society.
What Is Social-Emotional Learning?
SEL is the foundation of our district’s work to create supportive, inclusive school environments. This program involves teaching students to understand their emotions, build trust and empathy with others, make positive decisions, and maintain strong relationships. Through evidence-based practices, SEL is integrated into daily lessons across MCSD, so students feel safe, welcomed, and connected.
Gathering student perspectives
Three times a year, MCSD surveys students and teachers to assess their sense of safety, connectedness, and well-being in school. The Conditions for Learning Survey asks students in grades 3-12 about their physical and emotional safety, their relationships with adults and peers, and their sense of fairness in school rules. This feedback helps the district shape programs that support each student’s learning experience.
Survey results indicate we are making progress. Elementary school students (grades 3-5) have reported improved connections with peers and adults. In grades 6-12, students, staff, and parents noted growth across all areas, especially in emotional safety. These improvements reflect our commitment to creating a learning environment where all students feel valued.
Behavior and support
MCSD recognizes that some students need additional guidance to meet school expectations. Behavioral issues are categorized into “majors,” like bullying or vandalism, which are addressed by principals, and “minors,” like disruptions, handled by teachers in the classroom. Data shows a reduction in major incidents this year, which is a positive trend. Staff members skilled in behavioral support work with students needing additional help to develop skills for positive interactions and decision-making.
Mental health resources
MCSD has also expanded mental health services by increasing partnerships with local and statewide agencies. In addition to in-person support, we are now offering teletherapy for students needing consistent, accessible mental health care and telehealth services for medication management. We’ve piloted hiring school-based therapists to work with special education-eligible students, offering targeted support where it’s needed most.
Parent education opportunities
In partnership with the Cook Center for Human Connection, MCSD offers monthly webinars for parents on mental health topics. These sessions, available in both English and Spanish, help parents better understand and support their children’s mental health. This initiative has been well-received, empowering families with tools and information to support their children’s well-being.
As one of Iowa’s leading districts in SEL, the MCSD is proud to offer robust programs that promote students’ social and emotional growth. With a focus on safety, mental health, and positive relationships, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where every student can thrive. Through our expanded services and ongoing commitment, MCSD is helping students build the skills they need to succeed today and in the future. Marshalltown CSD embraces the lead!
