James Determan

James R. Determan, 68, passed away suddenly on July 25, 2026, at his mother-in-law's home in Ardmore, Oklahoma.

James was born on February 6, 1958, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Hugh and Doris (Kunkel) Determan. He was raised on the family farm near Haverhill, Iowa. He graduated with the Marshalltown High School Class of 1976.

In 1981, he moved to Kansas while working for the railroad. He met his future wife, Kim Hurst, and they were married July 2, 1983, in Arkansas City, Kansas. They made their home in Arkansas City their entire married lives.

He worked over 40 years for Gott Corporation, later Rubbermaid, where he was known for his hard work and commitment.

James was an avid fisherman, spending as much time on the water as possible. He was also a devoted fan of the University of Kansas athletics and the Kansas City Chiefs.

James and Kim have two daughters, Sara and Jennifer (Jenni).

His greatest joy was talking about his grandchildren, Peyton, Lexi and Braydon, of whom he was incredibly proud.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Doris; his brother, Thomas Determan; and his father-in-law, Bill Simmons.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Kimberly; daughters, Sara (Clint) Banister, Newkirk, Oklahoma, and Jenni (Bryson) Hasty, of Arkansas City, Kansas; his cherished grandchildren: Peyton Banister, Lexi and Brayden Hasty; and his mother-in-law, Sue Simmons, of Ardmore, Oklahoma.

He is also survived by his siblings: Carol (Tony) Edel, Zachary, Louisiana; Sheila Rawe, Marshalltown, Iowa; Charles (Ann) Determan, Haverhill, Iowa; Duane (Denise) Determan, Haverhill, Iowa; Gordon (Tammy) Determan, Haverhill, Iowa; Wanda Determan, Haverhill, Iowa; Nora (Jim) Burkgren, Hampton, Iowa. He is also survived by 23 nephews and nieces and many extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, August 22 at the Shelley Family Funeral Home in Arkansas City, Kansas.
