Vote for Sue Cahill

I am writing in support of Sue Cahill’s campaign to represent the City of Marshalltown as one of our at-large city council members. I have known and worked with Sue for several years. Sue has been a dedicated educator and public servant. Sue loves Marshalltown and has worked tirelessly to build up our community. Sue believes in our community because she believes in the people who call Marshalltown home. Sue is a team player, she has exceptional communication skills, she listens to concerns and is a proven consensus builder. Sue will collaborate with her constituents, city staff, and ...

Support for Eric Goslinga for Marshalltown School Board

Have you ever wanted to see how the sausage is made? Maybe not—but wouldn’t you want to know the person who does know how it’s done, and more importantly, has a recipe that works? That’s how I feel about Eric Goslinga. When it comes to leadership, whether in the classroom, the community, or on the School Board, I want someone with experience, knowledge, commitment, and passion. Eric has all of that and more. His years as an educator and administrator in the Marshalltown Schools make him uniquely qualified to serve taxpayers and families well. He has a vested interest in the ...

Integrity

Integrity is the cornerstone of effective leadership. We, the public, depend on our local leaders to have integrity when setting policies, allocating resources, representing their personal interests with honesty and transparency because the decisions they are making have a direct impact on our lives. Their integrity influences public trust and encourages civic engagement. When our leaders display strong moral principles, they will resist favoritism, discrimination, the misuse of power, and strive for an equitable community. Leaders with integrity will encourage us to participate in ...

Senior men behaving badly

I saw a pre-Halloween ghoul display at the Marshalltown library board meeting in October. John Worden has long made a fool of himself picketing the library, telling lies on television and using a private retailer for an unauthorized petition, but this was the lowest ...

Supporting Gary Thompson

For what it’s worth, I’m supporting Gary Thompson for mayor. I like most of the ways he votes at the meetings.

Candidate suggestions

Having spent a dozen years as councilor then mayor, and, between city administrators, the temporary acting city administrator, I probably know more than most people do about the candidates and city staff. Mike Ladehoff has been the mayor pro temp, subbing for me often when my statewide civil trial practice made me miss meetings. His meetings are shorter and people certainly find him more approachable than me. Employed at Emerson’s nuclear division, he is smart, organized and hard-working. He is married with successful children, a homeowner, a race enthusiast, and one of the most ...
