All opinions matter and need to be published

I read Pete Grady’s letter to the editor where he was critical of Randy Evans' Op-Ed piece regarding the Marshalltown Library’s rejection of the Epoch Times newspaper and the American Rifleman magazine. Grady incorrectly identified the source of the Op-Ed as coming from the Iowa Capital Dispatch rather than the Iowa Freedom of Information Council, for which Randy Evans is the director. That’s an interesting mistake Grady made since the very name of the organization Evans represents was the point of his Op-Ed piece — freedom of information. I’m not taking sides on the Epoch ...

In support of creative placemaking initiatives

It is an exciting time for Marshalltown! Congratulations to our city on the Council’s decision to invest in the implementation of our community’s Arts & Culture Master Plan! This is a positive step forward in helping Marshalltown become the place that people, young and old, want to live, learn, work, and play. I was born and raised in Marshalltown, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame majoring in Marketing and Visual Communication Design. Last year, I wrote an argumentative research paper, “Cool S*** for my Hometown,” supporting the implementation of a ...

Back in angle parking a bad idea

You are eliminating many people from shopping downtown if they have to back into a parking space. That is common sense. Who came up with that crazy idea? Especially older shoppers. And it holds up traffic. While negotiating into the space, cars are backed up. Just not feasible. Worse than it is now. Make it easier, not more difficult.

Quit blaming the victim

You reprinted the Iowa Capital Dispatch’s attack on the Marshalltown Library. The Dispatch article avoided the real issue: whether The Epoch Times should be in the Library. Instead, the Dispatch (and the T-R, by its reprint without comment) avoid the issue and blame the victim of ongoing harassment. You blame the Library for its determination that The Epoch Times is not a responsible source for news, but you don’t evaluate whether the decision was correct. The Dispatch recounts that the Library did a “deep dive” on The Epoch Times before deciding it was not appropriate for ...

Nikki Haley — A fighter for America’s farmers

Farmers are the backbone of America. Today, many of our nation’s leaders have forgotten that truth. That’s why we need a President with a strong record of standing up for farmers – and Nikki Haley is that leader. How do I know she’ll fight for us? America watched her do it as governor of South Carolina. Nikki knew agriculture was a large contributor to the Palmetto State’s economy, so she partnered with farmers instead of icing them out. Her leadership ushered in double-digit economic growth for South Carolina and turned the state into the ‘beast of the Southeast.’ Her ...

Leave turkeys off the table

In the United States alone, 46,000,000 turkeys are killed for Thanksgiving. These 46,000,000 innocent animal lives were taken for no reason. Of the 245,000,000 turkeys killed in the U.S. in 2022, nearly all were raised in crowded toxic fume-filled sheds, and their talons and beaks were violently clipped to prevent stress-induced aggression. At only sixteen weeks, their throats are cut by industry workers before lowering them into boiling water to remove their feathers. Human health also pays a hefty price at Thanksgiving. Turkey meat is full of saturated fats and cholesterol, and ...
