Builders and destroyers

Some people are builders, and others are destroyers. Some people want to help others by creating new opportunities, giving them new skills, or finding new ways to help them achieve their dreams. Other people want to create obstacles, deny opportunities, or frustrate their hopes. Take the skill of reading, for example. Some people want to help others learn to read — showing them how to recognize letters and sounds, giving them the opportunity to comprehend written material, guiding them to books, inspiring their passion for understanding. We call these people teachers and ...

Our new diplomacy

To Dictatorships: Just had a very constructive 2 hour phone conversation with Putin. I can TRUST him. To Democracies: You don’t have the cards, we have the cards. We will take control of Greenland one way or another. Ukraine, give us 40% of your scarce minerals to keep receiving aid from us. Canada, you will become our 51st state or we will completely destroy your economy. To Palestinians: two million of you must relocate. We don’t care where to, but you can’t come back. The United States will construct the Riviera of the middle east in Gaza and will control it. Hard to imagine ...

Tolerate our differences

This is a secular and democratic nation. What occurs in your Christian church is a matter that concerns only your church. It is essential to respect differences in faith and the freedom of adults to make choices about their bodies and relationships. Tolerating these differences does not require you to abandon your beliefs, nor does it undermine them simply because others hold different views. If you attempt to use the government to force others to conform to your religious beliefs, you are being narrow-minded and intolerant. Doing so inflicts harm upon our society.

Trump and Vance are embarrassing us

When I was a smart aleck teenager getting ready to go out at night with my friends, my mom and dad (who were Goldwater Republicans) would tell me: “Behave yourself in public, and don’t embarrass us in front of the neighbors.” As a fun-loving youth, I dismissed what they were telling me. But now, as a parent and grandparent, I see it as sage advice. I thought of my mom and dad the other day when I read news stories about Donald Trump and JD Vance trying to bully Greenland and Denmark into submission. Watching Vance’s 23-minute press conference at a U.S. military base made me ...

Bare knuckle psychology

After observing two months of the Trump administration I ponder why leaders and elected officials of the Democratic party seem afraid to go for the philosophical and psychological jugular when dealing with the Republican party and their disrespect for the rule of law and common decency. For instance the shipping of supposedly Venezuelan gangs into an El Salvadoran maximum prison facility without due process is no different than the low down Nazi maniacs who shipped Jews to the death camps. Most Americans are extremely ignorant of our imperialist history! Its an evil ploy to sweep ...

Pass the EPIC Act (HR 1492)

Dear editor, Congress should pass the bipartisan Ensuring Pathways to Innovative Cures (EPIC) Act (HR 1492) and help fix a glaring flaw of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), creating new access issues for patients and undermining the development of innovative treatments and cures. I hope our leaders in Washington will help support and pass the EPIC Act without delay and focus on better ways to protect patients from high prescription and medical costs. The IRA enforces price-setting policies on medications that come in the most recognizable, convenient, and cost-effective form of ...
