The Newton baseball team broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth inning of an eventual 8-0 victory over Marshalltown on Tuesday night at the MHS diamond. The visiting Cardinals (2-2) led 2-0 before breaking loose in the fifth, scoring five times on just two hits but four walks and a hit batsman. Hawkeyes, Huskies to start hoops series

Iowa and UConn will begin a home-and-home women’s basketball series next season, the schools announced Tuesday. Iowa will travel to Connecticut for a Nov. 8 game in Storrs or Hartford. The Huskies will play at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in 2027-28 on a date to be determined. UConn has won seven of 11 all-time meetings. The teams split the last two, with the Hawkeyes winning 71-69 in the 2024 NCAA semifinals in Cleveland and the Huskies winning 90-64 in the Women’s Champions Classic in New York in December. CARLSBAD, Calif. — The Iowa State women’s golf team finished ninth at the NCAA Championship, tallying the best finish in school history. The Cyclonitas fell one stroke shy of qualifying for match play, where the top eight teams will determine the national champion over the next two days. ISU senior Pammy Chookaew closed her career in a tie for 23rd, the third-best NCAA finish in program history. Chookaew shot a 75 in the final round for a 1-over-par 289 over the four rounds.
