American Legion Auxiliary Fall Conference
The Marshall County Fall Conference of the American Legion Auxiliary was held on Sept. 13. Hosting this meeting was the Liscomb Unit, held at the Liscomb Community Center. The colors were already posted at the head table. Pat Williams served as parliamentarian and Kathy Price as page.
President Stacy Bane called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. The invocation was given by the Gilman Unit. The State Center Unit led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. All Units joined in singing the “National Anthem” followed by a moment of silence for the MIA/POWs and deceased veterans. The Marshalltown Unit led the Auxiliary Preamble. The Liscomb Unit gave the Welcome followed by a response from the Laurel Unit.
The president introduced special guests: Third District President LaDonna Runner, Third District Project Chairman Betty Coulthard and Iowa Veterans Home Representative Stacy Bane and several members of the Beaman and Conrad Auxiliary Units.
The secretary took roll call of officers present: President Bane, Vice President Price, Secretary Candy Wait and Treasurer Marcella Stewart.
The secretary read the minutes of the 2013 Spring Conference. Price’s name was omitted as vice-president, minutes were approved as corrected.
The secretary took the roll call of Units, numbers of delegates present and membership paid to date. Gilman, two present and 27 paid; Laurel, two present and six paid; Liscomb, six present and 24 paid; Marshalltown, three present and 28 paid and State Center, two present and 20 paid.
The Spring 2015 Conference will be hosted by the Gilman Unit.
The secretary called for Unit reports, many thing the Unit do are helping the IVH residents with Bingo and other activities, a food booth for the IVH Foreign Food Fair, made and furnished supplies for children’s activity bags, furnished food for Teachers Day, distributed poppies and had poppy displays and sent girls to Girl State.
New Business – President Bane reported a request from the Beaman and Conrad Auxiliary Units to join the Marshall County Auxiliary due to the Grundy County Auxiliary disbanding. Price made the motion to accept the Units joining Marshall County. Dorothy Sorensen seconded. Carried.
It was brought up that Arlene Kramer wants to start a Marshalltown Junior Auxiliary Unit, girls would remain in own town Units. Price made a motion for Kramer to pursue this, Sharon Hatch seconded, carried.
Bane reminded all Units to send names of deceased members to Marlene Mauer by October.
Hatch, Price and Williams were voted to serve on the nominating committee.
Bane read the IVH Bingo schedule. There will be a need to change the Marshall County Standing Rules at the 2015 Spring Conference to include the Beaman and Conrad Units.
The IVH report was given by Representative Bane. There are 583 residents, 474 men and 109 women of which 15 are veterans.
Upcoming dates to remember are:
Benefit Affairs in September; Halloween Dance, Oct. 31; Christmas Gift Wrap, Dec. 1 is set up with wrapping Dec. 2 and 3; Foreign Food Fair, March 10, 2015; Spring Carnival , April 25; Ladies Luncheon in June and Summer Dance Bash, July 13.
Bane plans to e-mail the IVH Calendar of events for each month to each Unit president to share with members. This may encourage more volunteer help at IVH for the veterans.

She told the members about the new Department President Diana Shadduck, her theme is “Heart and Hands For Veterans.” The Third District Fall Conference will be Oct 18 in Denver, Iowa. At the National Convention, there was a discussion on the Centennial Plan of a million auxiliary members by 2019. Runner had new State Auxiliary pins for sale.
Betty Coulthard, Third District President Project Chairman, told of Runner’s projects: monetary donations to IVH Gift Wrap and Quilts of Valor. There had been 70,000 Quilts of Valor made in the last seven years, a veteran gets a Quilt of Valor once in a lifetime for their military service to the country.
The Liscomb Unit gave the registration report with 20 present.
Courtesy report was given by the Marshalltown Unit.
The Gilman Unit held the closing prayer.
All present sang in unison, “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”
The meeting adjourned. a silent auction was held following the meeting.
Cookies, coffee and punch were served by the hosting Liscomb Unit with the table decorated in red, white and blue colors.
