• Rogelio Minjares Simental made an initial appearance on a violation of a no-contact order/contempt of court charge and a criminal mischief-first degree charge. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel on the criminal mischief charge. The preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 29. Bond is set at $10,000 cash.
• Michael Tavai made an initial appearance on an operating while under the influence-first offense charge, a carrying or possession of weapons while under the influence charge, a possession of a controlled substance-first offense charge and a no valid driver’s license charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 8. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court.
• Luke Dale Freland made an initial appearance on a violation of probation charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The probation revocation hearing will be set by the District Court. Freland is being held without bond.
• Ramon Garcia Nino, made an initial appearance on a driving while license is denied or revoked charge and a no insurance charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is waived.
• Daniel Mendoza made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The probation revocation hearing is set at 11 a.m. on Feb. 9.
• Eduardo Zamudio made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The probation revocation hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 9.
• Donna Marie Soto made an initial appearance on an assault causing bodily injury or mental illness charge and a child endangerment-injury charge. Stephen Allison is acting as counsel. The preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 8. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• On Thursday, Jan. 18, Luke Freland, 41, was arrested on a warrant.
• On Friday, Jan. 19, Michael Tavai Jr., 44, was arrested for carrying weapon-while intoxicated, possession of a controlled substance-first offense and operating while under the influence-first offense.

Accidents
• On Thursday, Jan. 11, a van driven by Marta Barbara Smigowska, 44, of Marshalltown, was westbound on East Main Street Road when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Smigowska van was estimated at $2,000.
