Jean Seberg Festival of the Arts slated for Nov. 4-5
The annual Jean Seberg Festival expands its scope this year with the addition of some arts-related exhibits and shows. The event, renamed this year as the Jean Seberg Festival of the Arts, will run Nov. 4-5, held at the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center in Marshalltown.
“This year is very different from years past,” said Orpheum Theater Office Associate Tammy Losing. “First, on Oct. 29-30, we will host a Jean Seberg Hi-Def Filmmaking and Acting Workshop. In those two days, students ages 14-18, will be instructed in the basics of writing, directing, acting, camera and digital editing, in a workshop led by instructor Steve Muntz from the MCC Broadcasting program. Those films will then be shown at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4, at the theater as part of the festival.”
Also on the evening of Nov. 4, Jean Seberg-themed awards will be given out. Throughout the two-day celebration of the late actress’ life and film career, art and memorabilia will be viewable. Seberg’s sister Mary Ann Shuey will be bringing in several personal clothing items once owned by the family. In addition, artwork will be on display by artists from around the world who created various pieces inspired by Seberg.
“We have two paintings created by an artist from South Wales, four watercolors from France and other pieces, ranging in age from being created in the 1950s to the present day,” said coordinator Nancy Adams.
On Nov. 5, doors will open at 10 a.m. at the theater, and at 11 a.m., Seberg’s 1966 thriller “Moment to Moment” will be screened. At 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, a fashion show entitled “Jean Seberg: Fashion Icon” will be held inside the theater’s Black Box. The show, coordinated by Adams and Linda Moore, will showcase the designs of several Iowa State University fashion program students, under the guidance of their instructor, Dr. Eulanda Sanders.
“I approached Eulanda a few months ago to see if we could coordinate a fashion portion into the festival,” Adams said. “A few weeks ago she and her students came to the theater and spent hours looking through Seberg photos and memorabilia to get a feel for her fashion sense to know how to design the clothes.”
The clothing designs in the show will all be inspired by Seberg’s legacy as a fashion icon.
Following the fashion show, Seberg’s spy adventure drama “Who’s Got the Black Box?” will be shown.
Movie and fashion show tickets are $6 each. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Orpheum’s office, by calling 641-844-5921, or on the days of the festival. People may also pick up brochures in the theater’s lobby that map out key Seberg-related locales around Marshalltown, as part of a self-guided legacy tour.
