Friday night festival
Car show, carnival, live music draw crowd to Oktemberfest
There was no shortage of things to check out during day two of Oktemberfest at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds Friday.
Cars of all ages, colors, sizes and models greeted festival-goers early that evening.
“This car belonged to Buddy Holly and the Crickets … this was their tour car,” said car show participant Leroy Morford of Marshalltown, describing his blue-and-white 1955 Pontiac Chieftain.
He said he got the car in New Mexico in 1996 and has taken it to at least 100 car shows.
While many cars at the show had a vintage feel, some were right off the production line.
“I just picked it up the day before yesterday,” said Tesla Model 3 owner Larry Tipton, who toted his dog Tucker with him as he admired his new car.
He said the model’s fuel efficiency and new technology interested him in buying one.
The car show was split into two categories, one for cars from 1970 or before and the other for cars from beyond 1970. Lyndon Williams won the older car category with his 1934 Ford pickup while Bob Grant won in the newer category with his 1971 Chevrolet Corvette.
Matt Feld was declared the winner of the motorcycle section with his 1978 Honda CM200.
Festival-goers also got to check out several bands, who played at the fairgrounds Activity Building.
Among the live acts were Brazilian 2wins and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Kids enjoyed rides at the carnival set up near the parking area at the fairgrounds and 17 crafters and merchants showed their products to visitors.
The Oktemberfest Grand Parade is set for 10 a.m. Saturday and will roll down East Olive Street from Seventh Avenue to 17th Avenue.
