Man arrested on felony narcotics charges during Thursday drug bust

A local man was arrested by Marshalltown police Thursday on several felony drug counts during an incident which resulted in two officers firing their guns.

No one was injured as the officers fired their weapons upon encountering an armed man while executing the drug search warrant at 302 N. Second St., according to Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper.

Trenton Michael Dodd, 26, was charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to deliver, a Class C felony, possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver, a Class D felony, failure to affix a drug tax stamp, a Class D felony, possession of marijuana first offense, and keeping a premises or car for the purposes of using or selling drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to criminal complaints and affidavits filed in Marshall County District Court.

Additionally, authorities armed with a search warrant found four firearms and a large amount of U.S. currency.

At his initial appearance Friday, a magistrate assigned the defendant a public defender, ordered him held in Marshall County Jail on $10,000 cash only bond and also ordered defendant to obtain a substance abuse evaluation and provide results to the court within 60 days of March 1. The defendant’s preliminary hearing is March 8.

The investigation of this incident is ongoing.

“The Marshalltown Police Department has asked the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to conduct an independent investigation of this officer-involved shooting,” Tupper said. “Pursuant to department policy, and normal protocols, the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while this investigation continues.”

Tupper said it’s rare for MPD officers to fire their weapons. In his more than seven years with the department, it’s only happened on three occasions.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the Mid Iowa Drug Task Force assisted in the incident.
