Marshalltown High School junior Sher Wah’s school interests are wide-ranging, from arts to history to sports.

“Art just helps me keep stress out and it’s my passion,” she said. “I love art.”

School sports like soccer and volleyball have a similar effect on Sher, giving her a sense of peace and joy. She said she particularly likes to play in defensive positions.

Sher said she gets a lot of enjoyment out of her advanced-placement European history class as well.

“It’s pretty interesting. I like learning about historical stuff,” she said.

While art and history are two of her main interests during the school day, Sher said she wants to pursue a career different from either of those areas: being a dental assistant.

Sher said she plans to go to Marshalltown Community College for the dental assisting program to continue her education after graduating as a Bobcat.

When she isn’t at school, playing soccer or volleyball, or painting a portrait, Sher said she often babysits her niece and nephew.

“In my free time I try to read sometimes. I like to play and babysit,” she said.

Being a history buff, Sher said she prefers to read non-fiction books.

Marshalltown High School English teacher Courtney Simons has noticed Sher’s aptitude in class.

“I had her last year as a sophomore too and I think the growth she’s made is just awesome,” Simons said. “I think she’s grown in the sense she advocates for herself really well and she’ll always ask for help, clarification, anything she needs.”

She said Sher is a reserved student who always does what she’s told in class. Overall, Simons said Sher has had her confidence expand since she came to the high school.
