Courthouse dome set for removal mid-May

T-R FILE PHOTO - The dome of the Marshall County Courthouse is set for removal in mid-May. A temporary roof will be installed and a new dome will eventually be put in the old dome’s place.

Marshall county officials said the tornado-damaged dome of the Marshall County Courthouse will be removed in a few weeks.

The exact time of the removal is not set, but county buildings and grounds director Lucas Baedke said it will be the week of May 13.

“When we get a nice day, the dome on top of the courthouse will be picked off and a new, temporary structure will go back up,” he said at Tuesday’s county supervisors meeting. “What we’ll do is we’ll pull the current dome off. They’re going to build a temporary, watertight roof system to put back on it so we can really inspect that area and do the work that’s going to be to need done.”

When that work is done, Baedke said construction crews will install a new dome on the building.

Baedke said the timeframe for the new dome to be installed is estimated at July or August.

He said the old dome will have to wait to come off until a day with low winds and other favorable weather conditions.

The spire on top of the dome was torn off in the July 2018 tornado. Along with direct tornado damage, the hole in the roofing allowed rain water into the courthouse, resulting in further damage.
