Union Pacific freight derails in eastern Tama County

A Union Pacific freight train derailed early Wednesday near the Tama County Road X Avenue crossing west of Belle Plaine. The Tama County Sheriff’s Office posted about the incident on their social media page.

The post said no hazardous materials were spilled.

The Union Pacific media spokesperson for Iowa had not responded to a News-Herald inquiry and the Sheriff’s Office did not have a report available yet by press deadline.

WHO Radio reported Tama County Emergency Management officials say it happened before 4 a.m., and there were no hazardous materials in the rail cars, which were carrying sugar and soda. There were no injuries.
