Man charged in Corvette theft

Sweet

Richard L. Sweet, 44, of Marshalltown, was arrested on first-degree theft by local police and taken to jail Wednesday.

Police stopped Sweet driving a black 1979 Corvette, on a traffic charge Aug. 11, Capt. Brian Batterson of the Marshalltown Police Department.

After an investigation, it was determined the vehicle had been stolen from a party in Michigan and Sweet drove the vehicle from Michigan to Iowa according to the complaint. Sweet was determined to have been the last person in possession of the vehicle before he tried to sell it to someone else, which resulted in the theft charges, Batterson said,

The reported value of the Corvette at the time of theft was $25,000. At his initial court appearance Thursday, a magistrate judge ordered Sweet held on $10,000 cash bond. His preliminary hearing is Oct. 25.
