Secretary Castro stumps for Warren

With presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., taking part in impeachment hearings in Washington, D.C. — and in the middle of a tough race to win the Iowa Caucus — she brought in someone to reach out to Marshalltown voters.

As her substitute, Warren sent former presidential hopeful and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development’s Julian Castro Thursday to rally supporters at Marshalltown’s La Carreta Mexican Grill.

The choice made sense.

Castro recently endorsed Warren as the best candidate to take on President Donald Trump.

First she has to reach the general election.

Polls are showing Warren in a tight race for one of the coveted top spots with three days left to go before the caucus.

Castro urged the senator’s supporters to knock on doors, work the phones, and be “Warren ambassadors” during the campaign’s closing days.

He repeatedly said Warren could beat Trump.

“Sen Warren is the only candidate to beat an incumbent Republican in the last 30 years,” he said.

Castro endorsed Warren based partially on his work with her in Washington when he was in President Obama’s cabinet and because of her values.

“As a Democrat appointed by a Democratic president, Warren was going to hold me accountable on many fronts,” he said.

“It is easy for Republicans to hold Democrats accountable and vice versa,” he said.

“She is fighting for people every single day,” Castro said. “She hears them. People in the middle-class, people fighting to get into the middle class, people who are overlooked. She will be a voice in Washington for every day Americans.”

Castro also commended Warren for taking a strong interest in the plight of Waukee trailer park residents whose new owners had increased rent on tenants 60 percent.

Many of the tenants were long-time residents on fixed incomes and who had lived at the park for years.

“That is the kind of leader she is,” he said.

Marshalltown businessman David Barajas and family heard Castro at La Carreta and will caucus for Warren.

“I took a good look at a number of candidates, and Sen. Warren has always been one in the top tier for me,” he said. “When Secretary Castro quickly threw his endorsement behind Warren, that spoke volumes to me. That is why I am caucusing for Sen. Warren”

Barajas said he, spouse Tammy and two daughters Madison and Mia will be first-time attendees at Iowa Caucus.
