The House of Compassion will host the annual Soup Bowl Luncheon on March 15.

The event serves as a fundraiser for the many services provided at the House.

Proceeds from the luncheon will be used for renovating the upstairs shelter.

The cost is $10 per person or $25 for families of three or more. Soup, bread and desserts will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Henry’s Catholic Church located at 211 W. Olive St.

The soups will include chili, chicken noodle, vegetable, vegetarian and broccoli cheese. They will be served in bowls made by Marshalltown High School art students, which attendees can keep and take home.

March Runner, the director of the House of Compassion, said volunteers are needed for the Soup Bowl Luncheon and the evening meals served at the non-profit every week Sunday through Friday.

There has been a decrease in volunteers to cook and serve these meals but the need is still great.

According to Runner, there has been an influx of people visiting the shelter because of the cold weather.

“There have been a lot of people coming in just to warm up for a bit,” she said.

Fewer people have been coming to the evening meals because of the low temperatures at night, but many are still depending on the House of Compassion for heat and supplies, Runner said.

Donations are also requested for the household supply closet, including diapers in sizes 3, 4 and 5, along with toiletries.
