Marshalltown to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday

Contributed photo Dr. Seuss wrote more than 60 books in his lifetime, with many of them becoming go-to books for teaching children to read.

Monday is Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and Anson Elementary plans to celebrate the beloved author in many ways.

Heather Pals, a third grade teacher at Anson Elementary, said the whole school will participate in one way or another.

“It depends on the class, but a lot of times the teacher turns each assignment into a Dr. Seuss assignment,” she said.

According to Pals, there will be 30 to 35 guest readers coming into the school, some of them police officers and firefighters.

Students will also participate in a scavenger hunt around the school and bingo.

Pals said her favorite Dr. Seuss book is “If I Ran the Zoo” because she often feels like she is running a zoo. She said she loves all Dr. Seuss books and most of them can be found in her classroom.

The top sellers on Amazon are surprisingly not his most recognizable titles, such as “There’s a Wocket in my Pocket!,” “Ten Apples Up On Top!,” “Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You: Dr. Seuss’s Book of Wonderful Noises” and “My Book about Me.”

The Marshalltown Public Library will also celebrate Seuss’ birthday. The library has a display of some of his books, and the first storytime in March will focus on Seuss stories.

Teresa Hannam, youth services librarian at Marshalltown Public Library, said Seuss’ books are most popular for young children. His beginning reader books, such as “Green Eggs and Ham” and “The Cat in the Hat” are checked out most often.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, pen name Dr. Seuss, was born March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Mass. and wrote more than 60 books before his death in 1991. His books have enchanted generation after generation, with some favorites being “The Cat in the Hat,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Green Eggs and Ham” and “Horton Hears a Who.”

Despite his passing, Seuss’ books continue to help many children learn how to read. These classics instill the love of books in many, and that is not likely to change anytime soon.
